The biggest movie star on the planet is once again at the fore-front of the advertising for his next movie HANCOCK, and even though Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman star… I think the movie the promotional stuff will stay being a one man Will Smith show.
Smith’s character in next year’s blockbuster doesn’t seem all that likable from the trailer and I hope he isn’t looked upon as being a drunken fool, rather than a superhero with some real issues.
The opening of the trailer suggested more tongue-in-cheek than I would have liked as did the whole bit with the whale and the same goes for the tagline of the first poster image for the flick.
Is this going to be more of a comedy than a serious superhero drama…
The Peter Berg (THE KINGDOM) directed movie opens on the first week of July and it should see Will Smith once again dominate the box office for that weekend. I’m predicting a number more akin with his usual standard fare, something around $50 million.
As for the poster? Well it’s ok for an early teaser, but it tells those who don’t visit movie sites NOTHING about the movie.

First impressions mean everything and this poster screams, “Oddball dramedy!” I don’t want Berg to try some Men In Black meets Superman parody. Superhero flicks are NOT meant to be joke-fodder. Audiences don’t want that. It simply doesn’t work.
I’m not saying Hancock has to neccessarily be X-Men type heavy fare, but if they’re going the comedy route (and everything I’ve seen and read screams pure comedy) then they better have one hell of a script. Anyone want to take bets on the chances of that?
Last time somebody tried something like this was Batman and Robin. And I think we all know how that turned out.
Is this consciously trying to imitate the poster/DVD image for The Big Lebowski? Not a very strong or clear poster – they better hope that the powerful star persona of Will Smith is enough to ensnare the audiences if this is going to be typical of the promotional material for Hancock.
you guys suck just because it a superhreo comedy, or a “bad poster” doesnt mean it a bad movie not that you said that but is semi-referenced in your comment. You guy are skeptics and bad one at that, not saying i’m any better, but at east give it a chance
(i’m not a fanboy either!!!)
Do you guys know anything about Will Smith? He is one of the best actors. In I AM LEGEND he was great and i know he’ll be great in this movie. I dont care what anyone says I know This is going to be a great movie.
