Filmstalker has given us the heads up on an interesting article that has turned up in the UK newspaper The Mirror…. where Casino Royale director Martin Campbell has admitted that Daniel Craig wasn’t the first choice to play James Bond. 

The article claims that Scottish actor Ewan McGregor was offered the role before Craig but turned it down because of a fear of being typecast. Campbell is quoted as saying…“I think he got another job or decided he didn’t want it.”

He went on to say that he (remember this was probably taken completely out of context)… “wasn’t totally convinced” of how Craig would match up to the previous actors who have played the English spy.

McGregor’s name was branded about for quite some time before Craig was cast but I could never picture him as being James Bond. Sure he’s a great actor and all but I don’t think he could convince me as 007, certainly not after playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars. 

I’ve made no secret on this site that I HATED the casting of Daniel Craig as Bond and my stance hasn’t changed too much in a year. I’m slightly more in favour now after seeing some images and trailer footage but for me I still can’t connect with him as Bond.

And it’s not because of his hair colour or anything ridiculous like that, it’s his acting style (which is superb by the way but not Bond like) and his presence. I’m willing to give him a go though and I will be the first to admit i’m wrong when the movie is released in a few weeks….. but is it just me or does Craig look seriously knackered in every image of the movie that has appeared online?

It looks like all he has being doing for a year is working out on a night rather than sleeping then coming to the set looking pissed off.
