Not that you needed this extra reason to see WATCHMEN but…

/film have deduced from a Paramount Pictures press release that a third trailer for J.J. Abrams’ STAR TREK will be attached to prints of WATCHMEN opening March 6th.

As usual it’s unclear if this is all prints of WATCHMEN (U.K. and U.S.) but as the key audience will be the comic book geeks and with WATCHMEN so far suceeding in reaching out to the wider audience where I think TREK has so far failed, it’s no surprise to hear of this announcement.

TREK badly needs WATCHMEN’s help.

I’ve been more than a little underwhelmed by all the footage we have seen from the TREK reboot so far and I think this project is in danger of two things…

1) Alienating the current fans of TREK by making it “dumbed down” cliched sci-fi/action drivel which represents little of the atmosphere or themes of the original show.

2) Not being broad enough to hit the wide audience it surely needs with a budget that exceeds $150 million. But when was a TREK movie ever going to make that kind of money?

I know those two points sound like a contradiction and maybe they are but you get my point. This project, the way they are making it, never had a chance to hit both those marks and making a profit.

I just can’t see this being anything other than a financial disaster. The trailers need to create a lot of new TREK fans and they simply haven’t.

All I hear about is WATCHMEN, WATCHMEN, WATCHMEN. It’s won it’s battle from rising from the depths of geek culture to mainstream hype but TREK is struggling.

I always enjoyed wachting Trek. I am a huge SW-Fan (I wore a Darth Maul costume at the Episode One premiere…and was the hero of the local newspaper for one day! Well..on the last page..and actually…it was pretty embarassing…ANYWAYS…), and also always enjoyed watching the Trek series and films…

BUT…I think the movie heads in the wrong direction. There are only two scenarios possible for me that would have worked with a new Trek film (or series!)

1. And REAL rebooth. Young Kirk and Co. is fine – but a NEW timeline. Not a new universe…just a total new and fresh start.

2. A entire new car – in the FUTURE. Lets say 1000 years in the future – that wuld be cool – and would give enough room for total new stories.

The fact that this is (AGAIN!) a time travel films kinda bores me too. Trek and timetravel became a real annoying partnership…

Anyways, I will watch the film and hope it will be good. So far there are enough good reasons to see it – but i wish they would have had the balls to make something REALLY new.

Hey,
I dont know anyone who know’s about Watchmen other than the geeks and people I tell about it and this movie is out very shortly.
Personally I think there’s a good chance it may bomb! Star Trek on the other hand, is a “brand” regardless of how good or bad the film is.
There’s always been two camps when it comes to Trek and that is you either Love Kirk ,Spock etc or you hate them.
I dont think this new movie will make much difference at all.

Well on Amazon, the book is 64th best selling in the current U.K. charts…

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Watchmen-Alan-Moore/dp/1852860243/ref=pd_ts_b_64?ie=UTF8&s=books

Now granted, it’s not Top 10 but for a comic book… that is some going, especially priced as it is (i.e. not the cheap £3.96 paperback fiction that usually sells).

My full time job is actually in a book shop and man, the thing is flying off the shelves. And I don’t mean young male readers but readers from all walks of life, surprisingly a lot of women too.

WATCHMEN is growing. The banners are getting lots of play at the forefront of cinema’s and people are really intrigued by it.

I know TREK is a few months further away but everytime I tell people there’s a new movie in the franchise coming out later this year they simply shrug a “who cares”.

“1) Alienating the current fans of TREK by making it “dumbed down” cliched sci-fi/action drivel which represents little of the atmosphere or themes of the original show”

I’ve had this argument multiple times with huge trek fans over the last couple of days. My point is that the show was cheesy as hell and basically isn’t near as great as most people seem to think it is. Seriously, go back and watch that show objectively and you get another opinion of it entirely. At least I do.
I used to love Star Trek when I was younger, but as I’ve grown older I’ve realized that show kind of sucked to honest. Yeah, it was original for its time maybe, but every episode was essentially the same thing every time:
1. Find new planet no one has ever heard of.
2. Find alien species on said planet.
3. Kirk falls in love with some alien chick on planet.
4. Aliens get pissed because Kirk is hitting on their woman.
5. Really poorly choreographed fight scene follows between Kirk and leader of aliens.
6. Credits

That’s is the premise of ALMOST every episode of the original series. There are some exceptions, and those exceptions are more tolerable to watch. I just find it funny that people condemn newer tv shows for being stagnant and not developing characters and such, yet Star Trek is glorified for doing just that; being predictable and having stagnant characters that don’t grow at all throughout the course of the show.
