Neil Blomkamp will direct a sci-fi movie with Peter Jackson!

Peter JacksonNeil Blomkamp is probably the most famous director in the movie industry to have not shot a single frame of film. He is of course the guy last summer who was hired to helm the big budget Halo movie, which depending on who you believe turned off the studio’s from putting their money towards the film because of his lack of experience.

Now Blomkamp is after said experience. Though it won’t be a small movie. This is going to be a decent sized sci-fi flick alongside his mentor Peter Jackson.

Well if you can’t get Halo off the ground, then why the hell not. We aren’t getting any younger…

Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp are going forward this spring on “District 9,” a live-action sci-fier that will mark Blomkamp’s feature directing debut.

Jackson will produce through his WingNut Films production banner. Blomkamp wrote the script with partner Terri Tatchell.

QED Intl. has committed to fully finance the film through its credit facility with Comerica Bank and Aramid Entertainment Fund, and it will handle worldwide sales.

Jackson’s Weta Digital are on board with production set to begin in the Spring.

Variety say the project has the benefit of being a big surprise film and big distributors will be keeping an eye on it as the writer’s strike has eaten away the chance to get other films into their future schedules, so they could see this as potentially a lifesaver to pick up.

We have no further details on the project but to me this sounds fantastic. If the world aren’t willing to let them go rip with Halo, then why not do another big sci-fi epic with a smaller budget and really show us what you can do.
