mysterio.jpgYes this article deserves every exclamation mark given to it’s title. In what is the most awesome news I’ve heard in a long time, Film Ick is reporting that Bruce Campbell will indeed be playing the role of Quentin Beck (aka Mysterio) in Spider-Man 3, but it’s not quite what you would expect.

Spoilers ahead (from Film Ick)…

“Peter Parker finds out about a Spider-Man movie being made and goes to the set to check it out. Avi Arad and Sam Raimi have cameos as the producer and director. Quentin Beck is the movie’s special FX guy”.

How genius and creative is that? Awesome. We have been teased about Bruce Campbell actually being Quentin Beck in the first two movies (ring annoucer in first movie, theater usher in second) who for those wondering the character in the comics had a series of dead-end jobs (one of which was working on special effects at a filmset dreaming to be a star or director) that he eventually became a disgruntled super villain with his knowledge of illusions and special effects to be an effective foe of Spider-Man.

This is one of the great things that Sam Raimi has done with the Spider-Man movies, he has placed all of these characters and possible future plots into the franchise that they can develop over time (Harry as Green Goblin II, Dr. Curt Connors as The Lizard, John Jameson as Man-Wolf).

Just imagine in the fourth movie, they could go with Bruce Campbell as one of the main villains when he decides to take on the role of Mysterio outside of the film set. That would be something to see, it would be fantastic to see Bruce Campbell as a villain on something as big as Spider-Man.

I really can’t wait for this thing. We get to see The Sandman, Green Goblin II, VENOM (something I must admit I thought we would never see) and now Bruce Campbell as Mysterio. Roll on May 4th 2007, it can’t come quick enough!

I don’t know. I like the actors and the overall concept of having these people in the movies, but why so many packed in one movie??!! It’s too much like Batman & Robin in that they crammed waaay too many villains into one batman movie so they could use the star power as a money bringer. I think that’s wrong, and I doubt Sam Raimi would try to do that(the money aspect, that is) but I think it’s getting a little crowded with all these villains in one movie…from what i’ve heard, venom only gets a small cameo at the end of the film, but the Green Goblin II and Sandman are like working together again? probably…and thats too reminescent of Spiderman 2 which was good, yes…but not as good as the first. But i have faith that Sam Raimi will balance the villain screen time throughout the movie.

ALK is right … it’s just like “Batman and Robin.” Oh, God … please not another one…

yeah just gotta have faith, Spider-Man 2 was great and was probably better than the first, we have now reason to doubt Raimi.

Bruce Campbell’s role will only be a 30 second cameo and the Green Goblin has now been built up over two movies so we already know what that character is all about, we don’t need 30 minutes of screentime to set him up.

Your probably right about Venom it could be a setup for a main villain in the fourth movie, with very little of it appearing in the next one.

Which leaves The Sandman as getting the most time I guess but who knows? Only time will tell

When I first read the title of this article I figured they were going Batman and Robin with this Spidey entry. But, if what you say is true, it actually sounds kind of cool.

Why does everybody keep coming up with this Batman and Robin syndrome of multiple villains?

There was a lot more wrong with Batman and Robin than that. If that movie had one villain it still would have been bad. Batman Returns had two villains and that worked fine for me.

Look at all the villains in Batman Begins (Watanabe, Neesom, Hauger, Murphy) and that worked well too.

Batman and Robin wasnt a bad movie because it had two villains, it was a bad because it was a terribly made film.

Well, Matt, I disagree with you that the villains worked well in Batman Begins. For me, that film worked so well due to the hard-hitting origin story told in the film, as well as some great performances. I thought the villains were silly, overcrowded, and the “plot” of poisioning the city was pretty lame.
