More weight to Joker as “Hannibal Lecter” in BATMAN 3
Batman On Film guest contributor Mark Hughes wrote on 23.01.10 in a piece titled “Why and How The Joker CAN return in Batman 3″ that nicely compliments my own from two days ago, in regards to the probable re-use of The Joker in next Christopher Nolan directed Batman movie;
“A subplot about this aspect of the Joker as he relates to Batman and Gotham could be an important addition to the storyline… We need not see an entire new storyline about the Joker menacing all of Gotham. The Joker as a supporting character, much like Lecter’s role in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was not the main plot but instead the most important narrative element making up subplots and character arcs”.
In an Oscar winning performance for Best Actor in the Oscar winning movie Silence of the Lambs - British thesp Anthony Hopkins is famously only on screen for 16 minutes of screentime but is the crux of the narrative, helping our protganist Clarice Starling’s murder case because she does not insult his intelligence and arouses a kind of sexual affection for her.
Even though the most memorable scene of the 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight took place inside a prison cell between Batman and The Joker – if I were David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan, writing that script for Batman 3 right now, this is exactly how I would accomplish the tricky feat of re-introducing the character in the next movie, but not overshadowing the new theme Nolan will want to explore.
Batman needs to visit The Joker because he has information on the new villain (The Riddler, The Penguin or whatever), or maybe Batman suspects that The Joker is pulling the strings from his prison cell.

Yes, but who will portray him??? That’s the problem. I don’t think any actor would want to have that “suck by comparison” stigma. They couldnt recast Hopkins if say he didnt want to do the Silence of the Lambs sequels, and it took a complete re-imagining of the Batman story to bring the Joker back into the fold and Ledger was still compared to Nicholson.
Easy. Leonardo DiCaprio. He’s in Inception, so it might have already crossed Nolan’s mind; he can grow the hair, great actor, and can pull of the facial expressions needed to continue the character and be similar without being a carbon copy.

Interesting piece Matt. I think Antonio must have been thinking of the lesser Lecter flicks. I often hear Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s name thrown into the mix on the count that he shares some characteristics with Ledger. Of course, he’s also in the Nolan camp now with Inception…personally I think it would feel odd to reintroduce the Joker so soon, at least from a movie watching perspective. I don’t think there’s any way to pull it off without it distracting from the rest of the movie, which is most unfortunate.
I really wouldn’t find it distracting, since I always think there isn’t a better villain out there than the Joker, especially on screen.
EASY, JOHNNY DEPP can replace Heath Ledger. His brilliant acting in Public Enemies made me smile. With some makeup his always the perfect joker. He often plays the character who is dark and cruel but with a calm side. His acting in Pirates of the Caribbean was amazing and i usually like his character in big movies.

At least batman begins was original, how ’bout we try that instead? Weren’t these films supposed to emphasize batman and story as opposed to villan and who’s playing them ? Why do we need a so- called “super ” villan anyway, nolan’s gangsters and politicians that inhabit gotham are interesting too, and no one right now will measure up to ledger ( the only reason the movie is even watchable)

There is no need for Hopkins though I love him. Daniel Day Lewis is a method actor equal to and was respected by Heath Ledger himself, and the two were friends. If anyone could do it, DDL. I wish he would. Look him up. The man can play almost any character, fuckin andrew ryan from Bioshock to an Indian in last of the mohecans

I agree D.D.Lewis is the man, but the statement “respected by Heath Ledger himself!!” is kind of like saying Brett Farve is respected by Matt Ryan himself. I mean before TDK no one would put Ledger even close to the same league as DiCaprio, Depp, Daniel Day Fucking Lewis, etc. Any one of these guys can pull off a different and equally awesome Joker. The reason Ledger’s Joker is so awesome, is because he masterfully took a completely different route on the iconic character. I would LOVE to see DiCaprio or Lewis’ take on the character. It should be their own artist license and they should not try to re-do or follow Ledger’s take. Recast the damn role. Ledger doesnt and shouldnt own the characterization of the Joker, the greatest villain in comic book history. Lets see how the next method actor wants to do it.
