Michael Bay to transform ‘OUIJA’ board to the big screen

Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company has been drafted in to produce OUIJA. The supernatural game, probably more recognisable if written colloquially as ‘wee-gee’ (here in the UK at least), is going to be part of Hasbro’s six-year deal with Universal studios.

The news was broke by The Hollywood Reporter this morning…

Platinum Dunes’ Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce “Ouija” along with Hasbro.

Although the specific log line for the film is being kept under wraps, the film will be a supernatural adventure with the Ouija board playing an integral part of the story. The movie is not taking a “Jumanji”-like approach, which involved a game coming to life.

I’m really not convinced by any of these board game adaptations, though if any would make an interesting movie I guess it’s this one - just a pity it’s going to have Bay’s influence. Not only that… but David Berenbaum, who penned the mostly lame Elf and worked on other box-office bombs such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, is said to be writing the screenplay.

For those of you not familiar with the concept of the Ouija board, here’s a quick snippet from Wiki…

A ouija board is any flat surface printed with letters, numbers, and other symbols, to which a planchette or movable indicator points, supposedly in answer to questions from people at a séance. The fingers of the participants are placed on the planchette that then moves about the board to spell out messages.

It’s probably worth noting that this announcement comes less than a year after the locally acclaimed release of a Ouija movie in the Philippines. Coincidence?

Probably.

  1. Wow, that’s uncanny (if not totally crazy) coincidence.
It just so happened that I’m from the Philippines,
and that “highly-acclaimed ‘Ouija’” released in Thai was originally a Philippine Horror flick.

  2. Sorry! Blame that on my poor research, I’ll update the post.

  3. Perhaps Bay will consult a Ouija board on when he’ll make a movie that isn’t crap.

  5. I say we let Bay pursue this project. There’s a chance that in his research and pre-production rigging he’ll mess around too much with a malicious Ouija board that’ll unleash an extraordinary amount of spiritual power/Captain Howdy and will totally horrify him, putting him into a mortified state where he can’t make movies any more…
