Mark Millar (Scottish comic book writer whose Wanted was turned into a summer blockbuster) is being really smart, continually and openly talking about his Superman pitch and in the process getting the dejected fans interested again in their hero after the debacle that was Superman Returns just two summer’s ago.
We heard recently that Warner Bros. had come to the decision to scrap the current franchise which they originally attempted to carry on with Bryan Singer in 2006, similar to what Marvel have done this summer with varying degree’s of success with The Incredible Hulk and what their company did with Batman Begins.
Therefore this will be Superman Begins, if you will. Back to the early days once again, when Pa and Ma Kent found the baby orphan who had fallen from the sky…
So that’s one barrier down… Warner Bros. want to restart Supes.
The second barrier is finding a writing/directing team to carry the project for WB, and a team that is as exciting as the partnership David Goyer and Christopher Nolan brought to Batman Begins.
Now if you cast your mind back a few months, Mark Millar came out of nowhere to tell us that he had been approached by a very famous American director who was mostly known for action films, asking Millar to write a script for a new Superman reboot.
The good thing is, Millar has been planning on this for ten years, hoping he would one day get his chance to work on the character for film. They have already pitched their idea to Warners (who came out with their reboot plans soon after) and it’s not hard at all to believe Millar and his mysterious director have won them over.
Here’s a great vid from G4 where Millar talked Wanted, Kick-Ass (which he claims is a much bigger movie than we thought, $70 million and it still has no studio!!!) and of course his new take on Superman…
“I’ve had this plan for like 10 years for a big three-picture Superman thing, like a Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. One to be released each year.” Millar said.
He says we will know for definitive if the film gets the greenlight in a few weeks, and if it is happening it needs to shoot next Summer. Of course they would need to find a leading man for that too, which is no easy task where Superman is concerned.
This is a really tantalising situation and we are all 100% behind Millar because his Superman writings have been fantastic and he is clearly a huge fan of the character. His vision is refreshingly epic and new, more in line with Chris Nolan’s long term way of thinking.
But it’s his mystery director that concerns us because he is an unknown quantity. My early money was on Zack Snyder as he is WB’s darling at the moment but you can’t rule out the likes of Michael Bay, Brett Ratner or Joe Carnahan who time and time again get mentioned for these things.
Even J.J. Abrams, who is well known for putting projects together just like this can’t be ruled out.
So come on guys, time for your input. Which American director do you hope is in cahoots with Mark Millar over Superman’s next Return?

I don’t think it’s Brett Ratner, isn’t he Fox’s golden boy? in anycase im hoping it’s Zack Snyder, so far I have loved his work and I would love to see his interpretation on screen.
I don’t like the idea of seeing his Superman. I’m not so sure if it’s smart to openly talk about what he plans to do. I think the director he’s talking about is Bay.
why does everyone want to copy the batman begins formula for success? Thats BATMAN and noone can top him studios should try new formulas
Joe Carnahan would be AWESOME as a Superman director. But that’s too smart a move for Warner Brothers.
Don’t be surprised if Michael Bay’s retarded ass comes up somewhere along the line in the conversation.
