Mann and MACHINE

frankiemachineVariety reports that Michael Mann has closed a deal with Paramount to direct Frankie Machine, a film based on Don Winslow’s novel The Winter of Frankie Machine.

Now here’s the cool part: Robert De Niro will take the lead role of Frankie Machianno, which makes this a reunion of a kind since Mann last worked with Bobby in crime epic Heat.

The trade papers give the follwoing plot description:

“…A mob hitman who has retired to run a bait shop. He agrees to help the son of a mob boss resolve a dispute with another Mafioso but is forced to turn into Frankie Machine again when he realizes he’s been set up to be killed. “

De Niro has been attached to the Brian Koppelman / David Levien draft for a while and at one point Martin Scorsese was going to make this film.

Once upon a time Mann was going to direct The Aviator but he ceded the director’s chair to Scorsese, so it’s interesting how the roles are now reversed.

  2. I don’t know what cliche’s this things wearing out more.

Maybe the old –VERY old!– hitman who winds up becoming the target, which seems to be the ONLY kind of hitman movie that ever gets made.
Or maybe the worn-out as hell, Pro who comes out of retirement to do “one last job,” which of course becomes the hardest of his career.
Then there’s the Yojimbo/Last Man Standing cliche of the blade/gunslinger who winds up getting embroiled with some underworld types and will no doubt wind up turning them against each other.
    Have I missed any?

I’ve seen all three of these movies countless times and didn’t like any of them. And with Michael Mann directing that means we’re going to get a movie that’s too damned long, has too many low-key and hence uninteresting characters, and too little action.
Mann still has some writing talent, but he needs to make his stories leaner and meaner. This doesn’t sound like that kind of story.

  3. [...] After failing to get THE WINTER OF FRANKIE MACHINE off the ground last year, Martin Scorsese is plotting another project which could mark a high profile reunion with his great collaborator Robert De Niro for the first time since 1995’s CASINO. [...]
