Thundercats! Another 80’s cartoon and toy franchise series that studio’s are turning to in what can now officially be labeled as a film movement. It’s funny isn’t it…
What exactly are people going to call this era of film in twenty or thirty years time? Is it going to be the exciting new era of movie-making as we push new technologies and original ideas to the hilt?
Not exactly.
We are a confused generation living in the past, constantly trying to resurrect franchises from our childhood experiences. Is it because the past we can look at in more favourable light than our future which is looking increasingly more dangerous and uncertain with terrorism, war, global warming and the like.
Anyway, Variety are telling us that Warner Brothers have snapped up a spec script written by Paul Sopocy (his first ever script sale) which puts the characters in a live-action universe. The script is said to be an origin story, focusing on Lion-O and his journey into leadership of The Thundercats.
Thundercats wasn’t my think as a youngster, but I know Dan loves it and bloody hell how many god damn t-shirts do I see of this thing every week. Every time I go shopping I must see at least three of them.
Is this the new Transformers? And seriously, when is this craze going to end?

It may have originated in the 80’s and the cartoon may have been it’s most commercial avenue but Thundercats has been continuing in comic form for that last 5 years now and has remained a bestseller since it began. Point is it’s unfair to call it a relic from the past because it’s still active today. Anyway the geek inside me is going crazy over the thought of this movie happening, but the side of me thats a film buff can’t help thinking it would look awful in live action, I just don’t think it would work. Also one last thing DON’T SET IT ON EARTH!! I BETTER NOT SEE A REPEAT OF MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE OR IM GONNA BE PISSED.
Long as Michael “F*ck-Up” Bay isn’t involved, it at least has a chance.
The more you think of “Live-action” and “Thundercats” in the same sentence… the harder it is to imagine this film turning out positive.
Hey, if they could make the make-up for HellBoy and The Mask work then ANYTHING is possible. All they really need is a kick-ass script and they’re half-way there.
Of course, what are the chances of THAT? Pretty damned slim.
I’m glad they are making a Thundercats movie and can’t wait to see it. I’ve been watching the original series with my son who likes it too.
I’m not sure what people’s gripe is with Michael Bay – I really enjoyed Transformers 1 and 2 – though maybe I was watching too much Thundercats and Heman to have got into Transformers as much as those who hated his version! I hope he does make Thundercats. I heard it wasn’t going to be live-action though – looked like it was going to be animated in similar style to Storm Hawks!
