Last HARRY POTTER to be split into two movies?

Finally Warner Brothers are starting to use their heads in a world where it seems they are hell-bent on ruining their comic book film income for the upcoming years.

The Daily Mail here in the U.K. are claiming that some members of the crew working on HARRY POTTER 6 have told them of WB’s plan to film the last book in the series HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS in two movies, with the final chapter released just a couple of months after the first, ala’ THE MATRIX finale a few years back.

This move would seem to make sense as,

A) HARRY POTTER movies make around $600 million PROFIT, so it’s an extra cash-cow for WB and with them struggling to find a POTTER replacement and get tentpoles off the ground… this is easy money.

B) The book is 776 pages long (more than 3 times as large as the first few books) and fans were pissed with each growing movie over how much material was being left out. Two movies obviously allow a far larger scope.

C) It’s more appealing to big directors, because they know this one will be epic and grandiose finish.

My girlfriend is absolutely desperate to get me into this series because as you know my current CV of Potter knowledge only consists of 20 minutes of one of the movies and not one book read. I will give them a go… but I’m not convinced it’s the world I’m going to be interested in.

Next job for WB is to find a director for this. Interestingly my girlfriend is a big LOTR fan and she claims that Guillermo del Toro was PERFECT for THE DEATHLY HALLOWS but not the type of director she wants to see on THE HOBBIT.

I’m pretty convinced he will end up with one of the gigs. But just which one? Time shall tell.

  1. This is ridiculous and completely unnecessary. Deathly Hallows is by far the easiest to compress into feature length. The book is largely filler…the entire middle section can be compressed down to 30 minutes tops. If they were able to streamline the other books, they can definitely do it to this one, even if it has to push the 3 hour mark.

As for the people pissed about irrelevant excess detail being missed out in the other films…cry me a river. If you want the book, read the book.

  2. Wow this Dave guy is a butthead. If people make a movie out of a book it should be like the book. I feel they should make both of the last two dvds beacuse really this next movie they are currently doing is a major part of the series. I hope they don’t chop it all up like the others.

  3. Why make a movie of a book that’s exactly like the book? What’s the point? Fine, keep it close to the book if it will work well in the different medium. But if it is overly long with details that won’t realistically be beneficial to a 2 hour storyline, change it enough so that it works. Nothing wrong with that.

I’d much prefer one streamlined, well paced, self-contained film to two slow, excessive, bogged down, yet completely accurate films. I’ve read the book, I know how it goes. If I wanted to relive that I’d just read it again. There’s about a third of Deathly Hallows that could easily be gotten rid of.

    Butthead.

  4. “There’s about a third of Deathly Hallows that could easily be gotten rid of.”

Try telling that to the idiots who decided to leave out “Snape’s Worst Memory” in OoTP. Deathly Hallows came out and wow, they screwed up in regards to Lily Evans.

Good job in cutting out the plot point.

  5. They showed Snape’s worst memory, just not the whole thing. They could elaborate upon it in a flashback scene in one of the next two films if they need to. Easily done.
