So did you see RAMBO this weekend in the U.K?
I didn’t and neither did anyone who visited an Odeon Cinema.
Surprisingly, one of the biggest cinema chains in the country have shunned the film for “commercial reasons”, which basically translates as “we won’t make money from that crap”. Although the triumphant return of Stallone to his second biggest franchise saw a very impressive opening weekend of $18 million in his homeland, Odeon obviously believed that they wouldn’t make a return on their investment on the picture and talks between them and Sony broke down before the film’s release on Friday.
It’s a baffling decision by the cinema chain when you see the box office results for the weekend. RAMBO still managed to grab third place with a £1.2 million taking on 300 screens, a figure that with Odeon’s help would have at least equalled or possibly bettered the opening of the week’s highest new entry BE KIND REWIND.
After all RAMBO ended the weekend with the highest theatre per average gross.
I mean an easy excuse would have been the massive violence in the film but then they were quite happy to see ALL THE BOYS LOVE MANDY LANE and last year flicks like CAPTIVITY and HOSTEL: PART II.
U.K. readers, did you see RAMBO this weekend? Has this decision angered you? What do you think the real reason for Odeon’s shun is?
I saw Rambo at an Empire Theatre because my local Odeon wasn’t showing it. I even emailed Odeon for an explanation which has not been forthcoming. Enjoyed the film but I am very angry about Odeon’s decision although having seen the film, I think the opening sequence of ‘documentary’ footage about the atrocities in Burma may have something to do with their decision.
