Keanu Reeves says CONSTANTINE 2 is unlikely

con3Not long after Chris Evans (aka The Human Torch) revealed that he was ready to walk away from the Fantastic Four franchise, Keanu Reeves is shouting out the same sentiments about the comic book character he portrays.

Hellblazer, the longest running series in Vertigo’s history spanning over 200 issues (it’s not called that in the movies because of it’s similarity to Hellboy - go figure!) was translated into a pretty lame CGI filled confused movie, which only carried a cent of the power of the original comic. And sadly, that might be all we see for a while.

IESB say they have interviewed Reeves who says he is not interested in doing another Constantine and nor does he wish to return to any of his past characters for future sequels, which also debunks a half rumor of 2007 which had him lined up to shoot a Point Break 2 (not that Swayze is in any condition for that right now).

For the last two years we have heard that WB have tried to push director Francis Lawrence into a sequel to the $230 million worldwide hit but so far it’s all been that, just talk.

Discuss: Do you want to see Keanu Reeves take on the Constantine character again? Would you rather the part was re-cast than see the series die? Who could replace Reeves for the role?

  1. The movie sucked… I don’t want to see it back in way, shape, or form.

  3. I’m more interested in seeing Keanu pursue new ideas and you’ve got to credit him for not settling for bog-standard “action hero archetype” roles after the success of The Matrix.

Keanu doesn’t deserve all the flak he gets, he’s a great actor with a sound screen presence and throughout his career he’s done a wide range of interesting stuff. Right now I’d like to see him pursue some more quirkey, indie material like A Scanner Darkly. There isn’t realy any point in retreading the same turf over and over when it’s apparent that he’d rather be pushing himself in different directions.

  4. I second what James Clayton said … finally, a couple of actors willing to say NO to the money and the bullshit. If only everyone in Hollywood felt that way, then we wouldn’t be subjected to these idiotic comic book shitstains.

  5. Keanu was OK as Constantine. I feared he would be a total disaster. I am a huge fan of the comic since the early 90s and he was Z on my list of actors who i wanted to see play the role. Hellblazer is a great property so I’d love to see it live on cinematically. They really need to take John back to England and make him a brit. Constantine would also work as a TV series. The best Hellbalzer stories were dark and character driven.

  6. I seem to be one of the few who liked the original movie, but why do we need Keanu anyway? He was nothing like the original character physically and there’s no reason why the series couldn’t continue with another actor, even if the budget needed to be cut. There’s plenty of interesting Hellblazers that wouldn’t need so much CGI anyway…

  7. I really liked the Constantine film, unfaithfulness to the source and all. Go figure. It was very kicky and Keanu was even very good in it. However, it would very easy to reboot the series, by recasting closer to the comics. I don’t see why they wouldn’t just do that and carry on. Remake and Reboot mania has gripped Hollywood, so you’d think they would be all over a remake on Constantine.

  8. I thought that Constantine was decent as was Reeves. I couldn’t care less if there was a second though.

  9. I agree with MDOC, they should recast & take it back to London like in the comic. A blonde brit would be what the franchise needs if it’s to make any more. Not sure who’d fit the character right off the top of my head, but I’m sure there’s someone who looks the part.
