JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE HIGH SCHOOL CAST

Posted by Matt Holmes on November 19, 2007 – 8:49 am | 13 comments

So there’s a conflicting report over at Superhero Hype in regards to the JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA movie where they have received a cast list of names quite different to the one found at other websites over the weekend.

Here ya go…

Superman – D.J. Cotrona
Batman – Armie Hammer
Wally West/The Flash – Anton Yelchin
Aquaman – Santiago Cabrera
Iris – Zoe Kazan
Wonder Woman – Megan Gale
Talia al Ghul – Teresa Palmer
Green Lantern – Common

Ok, I’m going to have to be real quick on this one because I should have left the house 5 minutes ago.

Armie Hammer was the guy who Batman on Film heard over the weekend would be in the film and it’s terrifying to see his name mentioned again (though it’s probably from the same source)…

Armie Hammer

D.J. Cotrona we KNOW auditioned for JLA and he looks like this…

D.J Cortona

Anton Yelchin is Chekov in the new STAR TREK, and his name mentioned for THE FLASH is something I have not heard before. I can’t see this guy being cast in both TREK and JLA, so I wouldn’t put much weight into this one.

Way too young for THE FLASH too…

Anton Yelchin

Santiago Cabrera is just about the first name I have heard linked with Aquaman since his character was confirmed for the picture. He is the guy from HEROES…

herosantcab

Zoe Kazan is the first name I’ve heard for Iris…

73865222

Megan Gale we know already is in the running for Wonder Woman, so her name isn’t a surprise…

gale2

Teresa Palmer’s name is once again linked with Talia Al Ghul, which is just so wrong for so many reasons…

Teresa Palmer

And finally, once again, Common is linked with the Green Lantern role…

09 common lgl

All that and then The Hollywood Reporter today comes out with this quote…

At Warner Bros., “Justice League of America” finds itself without a shooting script and has options expiring on potential actors who recently were screen tested. As a result, it might have to postpone production.

We haven’t heard the last on this one folks. This week promises to be a big one in the future of JLA.

I’d sooner believe NONE of these people will be in the movie. In fact, I was confident of the Common rumors until he appeared on this list. Cotrona and Hammer are a joke. Fandom would burn the studio down if they confirmed that. The rest of them are bland and Common looks way older than the others.

JaySmack on November 19, 2007 at 11:39 am

I agree with No Way. Common’s too old to be with this group, and who the hell wants a hip-hop sooperhero anyway? I sure as hell don’t! The casting of a movie says a lot about the production and the minds behind it, and the cast for this flick has said nothing good, so far.

If nothing else the writer’s strike has stopped at least one unmistakably bad movie from coming to light. Hopefully they’ll use this time to absorb some of the negative feedback they’ve been getting and realize how badly they’re screwing this one up.
And maybe pigs will finally learn how to fly too!

This movie is dead, the HR article pretty much proves it. Kinda funny since a month ago WB was going on and on about how it was the best script since Casablanca. The strike gives WB a way out without losing face. They’ve no doubt heard the fan reaction.

I will say that Megan Gale’s got a good face for WW. No idea if she can act, though…

DJ Cotrona is the most hilarious choice I’ve ever heard for Superman. Isn’t he… ummm… hispanic (not that there’s anything wrong with that, but Superman’s not)? And 19?

Armie Hammer looks like the kid that placed Iceman in the X-Men flicks. But younger.

The sad thing is, this thing could have worked. Parts of the script sounded interested, even though Max Lord is a pretty C-list bad guy. I liked the Barry Allen stuff, though, and the Supes vs. Bats. vs. WW showdown. And I think George Miller could do the film well.

I’ve never seen a movie destroy itself via casting like this. If they had gotten Routh and Bale on board, most of fandom would be chomping at the bit for this. And even if they’d gone out and gotten good, adult actors, it would have had a shot.

It just makes no sense. Whoever made the decision to go this young should be fired. I kept hearing they wanted to go young because of sequels– how fast do they think people age, anyway? I mean, Toby Maguire’s done 3 Spider-Man movies, he still looks alright. Is Bale going to be too old for the third Nolan Batman? Of course not. People’s looks don’t change that much, especially not in Hollywood with the benefits of cosmetic surgery and makeup artists.

Then to introduce continuity clusterfucks like Talia and Alfred… what the hell? Are you just flaunting that this thing has no place in a shared movie universe? Pointless.

Just do Superman/Batman after MAN OF STEEL and Nolan’s third chapter. Make introducing Wonder Woman part of the plot. Do your Green Lantern and Flash movies, then bam– give us Justice League. That’s how Marvel is doing it with AVENGERS– the right way.

Awful. What a complete waste of an idiotic idea.

The easy way to right this ship is to cast Tom Welling and Michael Keaton. That would bring the same “When Worlds Collide” energy that they lost when Bale left. A mashup of Burton’s Batman and Smallville’s Superman could intrigue and excite general audiences.

Of course, Keaton is 56 and looks his age, but he can easily portray an older, more paranoid version of Batman. He is also in no shape to do his own stunts, but luckily the Batman suit covers almost head to toe, making stunt double use very easy.

The other big issue is money. At any other time, in any other movie, neither actor could warrant much of a fee. They’re definitely not A-list. But, this isn’t any other time, in any other movie. If the studio is serious about getting this franchise (and its spinoffs) off of the ground, they might have to pay A-list type money to these two actors. That would be hard for the studio to swallow, but the upside is that it wouldn’t really matter who else they cast, so they could continue to be stingy with the rest of the cast. Miller could plug in whoever he wanted and audiences wouldn’t bother saying peep, because they’ll be too busy obsessing over the whole When Worlds Collide thing.

Ah, but what about casting continuity with Burton’s Batfilms and especially Smallville? What if future films have Vicky Vale or Lois Lane show up, but Miller wants to recast the roles? Simple. Say JL occurs 15 to 20 years after Smallville and the Batfilms. Superman looks the same since he is semi-immortal, but everybody else should have aged and needs a recast.

This really shouldn’t require a great deal of effort to happen. Put the rest of the cast between 27 and 35 and they’re done. If the studio truly believes in the script, a Keaton and Welling casting would get it going, but if they have any doubts, then it may take too many hoops to jump through to sign them. Then the studio is better off just letting JL die.

Wow, This cast sucks. Im sure they are all good actors but they look nithing like their roles. look at Aquaman for example. the guy was great in Heroes but I don’t see him as aquaman. most of these people are way too young.
Batman looks like Robin for peats sake. I don’t get it at all. wb should stick with their batman and superman frnachises and leave this laone until they can do it right.

DirtyLungs on November 19, 2007 at 8:13 pm

Well, needless to say, I for one will not support this shoddy attempt to create a franchise for franchise sake. I shouldn’t but I take great offense as a performer and as a member of the film going community in reference to this project; it’s almost a personal thing. I feel cheated, lied to and disrespected because of how this project is coming down.

Great concept aside, I feel that the execution of this movie is quite insulting. For the studio to assume that this film will warrant enough sequels to establish a franchise, first off, is a combination of arrogance and stupidity. And, for those sequels/spin-offs to be handled in the way that’s reported is insulting to the audience: using john stewart for JL and the Hal character for the spin-off movie? Continuity is all over the place for the film division of DC Comics, and if I were a lifelong fan of them, as people are for Marvel or any other umbrella, I’d be pretty damned offended that some suit was jerking off over my childhood.

When it comes to this news of casting, I’m disheartened. The casting breakdowns asked specifically for performers with theater and improv trainning, those who excell in an ensemble, and a Green Lantern who could market the urban demographic “such as the likes of Common or Tyrese Gibson.” I’m not seeing a whole bunch of theater credits among these people, only one for certain has worked in a credible ensemble, and if they wanted Common (who has no theater/improv/ensemble credit- aside from his 15 minutes in Smokin’ Aces) from the get-go, why waste anybody else’s time? They say they wanted young faces, but reports of the script (which was written, not written, the best script ever written, and now non existant for shooting in less than three months) put Batman as the elder of the group. What’s Armie pushing, 25?

I’m dissapointed. I’m dissapointed by everyone involved in this production, and because of that, Warner Brothers won’t see a dime from me go towards this production, ever. It’s the only way to combat the errant super-capitalism that has infected the upper eschelon of Hollywood.

Christ! a hispanic Superman????that’s worse than a hispanic Invisible Woman!!!
And a 2 year old Batman….I smell another Catwoman on the horizon.
What a shame, Who the fuck is in charge at Warners anyway?

Tino on November 19, 2007 at 9:45 pm

A latino superman is one of the worst castings (if true) I have heard for a well establised character, and thats coming from a laTINO (get it). As for the rest of the casting choices, they all look awful except for the one of Wonder Woman, she seems to have the look down. I can’t help think this gonna be another DC casualty, another black mark against Warner Bros and another one of those soon to be forgotten movies in the bargain bin.

huh on November 22, 2007 at 10:22 pm

I don’t know where you guys are getting it from but Cotrona isn’t latino. At all.
Is he superman?
Well, THATS another question….

GL2814 on December 19, 2007 at 2:55 am

How tall is Cotrona? Please answer me,I’ve been searching for weeks and haven’t found anything on his height. Someone PLEASE help me!

Jimbo on March 7, 2008 at 6:09 am

Wot a shame.

I’ll probably go and see it anyway because of my love for the characters but i have a feeling that is how they will get everyone in the seats.

Im expecting to come out of the cinema feeling cheated.

Extend the Superman and Batman stories so they are established. Start Green Lantern and Flash stories etc so everyone will know what everyone it is about. Marvel Style!! Then bring the thunder of the Justice League even if it does mean casting a new Batman and Superman for it.

WB/DC, do it right. Please!!!!
