Jodie Foster to play a Nazi film-maker?

prlaprem1.jpgOne criticism I hear constantly about Jodie Foster since the start of this century is that she constantly goes for the “safe” acting choice instead of pushing herself as an actress and going for more challenging roles.

Well the story from Cinema Blend today is that she ain’t take the safe path no more.

It’s been reported that Foster will play Nazi film-maker and Adolf Hitler obsessive Leni Riefenstahl, whose propaganda movies were shocking in their message but absolutelyamazing for their film aesthetics and innovative nature in the first half of the last century.

There isn’t much else to go on here and the flick would seem to be in the early stages but I think this movie sounds absolutely fascinating. In her late life, the director was said to have been shocked and horrified about what the Nazi’s were really doing with things such as the holocaust and if the film goes to that depth (which it would be criminal not to) it will be fascinating to see a character study on the slow revelation and disgust on the psyche of a Nazi supporter.

Foster is a great actress but she hasn’t shown it enough recently. This surely though, is Oscar potential material?

I think you’re absolutely right, this has potential to be Oscar material. More than that, I’m just happy to see her take on a role that, at the moment at least, appears to be a little more challenging.

Jodi Fosters’ an…original actress. she walks to the best of her own drummer, wherever that drummer takes her. One moment she’s playing a twelve year old hooker, then a nun, now a Nazi.

Yep, that sounds like Jodi Foster to me.

Sounds great. Anyone who has studied the Nazi’s will appreciate coverage of this subject. I just hope Hollywood doesn’t turn this into another ridiculous indictment of Bush and Iraq War. In Hollywood’s twisted Orwellian world “Doublespeak” has been replaced by “Hollywood-Speak”. Ironically, if you want to see a modern day example of Riefenstahl genre check out today’s NYT’s Op-Ed: “Know Thine Enemy”. Here’s a clue, we’re the bad guys and the guys who cut people’s heads off, execute gays, and intentionally blow up women, children and babies are the good guys. When watching this new propaganda one has to admire its Riefenstahlish slickness. You almost forget the truly horrible deeds of these “hereos”. One has to wonder if, like Riefenstahl, that someday, the NY Times will wake up in self-honor and remorse at the enemy that they so clearly have supported. Just watch this film and judge for yourself.
