“James T. Kirk was a great man, but that was another life” – Best STAR TREK trailer yet!

Why do I find myself saying this statement time and time again when it comes to reboots and rebranding of franchises…

“If it wasn’t called STAR TREK and was based on something classic, this would be one of the best looking movies of the year!”.

trail3_11

Because it is, really. The movie looks great, it’s just about the best ensemble science fiction trailer I’ve seen in a long time, probably only the trailers for Danny Boyle’s SUNSHINE can rival it.

Seeing the hints at the big battles involving the Enterprise, well, this is the kind of thing J.J. Abrams revels in. That ship battle just looks insane.

(we await HD links… though it is attached to WATCHMEN)

Love the backstory about Kirk’s father, I didn’t know that and I can’t figure out whether that is Abrams’ touch or whether it was part of the classic mythology that he was Captain for a cup of coffee but saved 800 lives?

This trailer is quite spectacular really, they nailed how to present this movie at the final hour. The moment Kirk sits in the chair, the classic chewing the scenery of Eric Bana, the destruction of the ship… this is one trailer with full confidence.

And is anyone else getting a bit of THE DARK KNIGHT score vibrate through their veins from Michael Giacchino, I like it.

STAR TREK opens May 8th and finally, I’m starting to lose my reservations about the film.

Looks great but Paramount is utterly re-writing Trek from the beginning. The biggest gamble in the history of any franchise. Next Generation continuity is gone.
And given Paramounts poor handling of Trek it will not be long before it’s seen to be a complete and unnecessary failure.

Still it looks great but so what? Nice cinematography is a given as are great SFX.

That looks AMAZING, though I say that as someone who isn’t a massive Trek fan (unlike, I’m guessing, the guy above).

Totally picked up on the Dark Knight vibe in the score – in fact, I thought they’d soundtracked the trailer with music from the Dark Knight. That film could be the next LOTR in terms of its influence on OSTs.

And, on a similar tack, but more Trek-related, am I the only person who thinks ‘Fire everything!’ will become the new ‘Ramming speed’?

Looks shiny.

Brilliant looking trailer- and Eric Bana is almost unrecognisable: that’s a performance Ive been looking forward to since the cast announcement.

I was a massive Trekker in a different life, so I’m always interested in developments in that universe; but I’m still a little wary of the reinvention thing, like Jaysmack. I want there to be high camp elements- ENTERPRISE ultimately failed because it didn’t channel the original spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s finest idea. If there is too much achingly-modern grit to it, I have to say I just wont be turned on.

On a plus note, I cant wait to see Simon Pegg’s Scotty- shame there isnt really anything of him in any of the trailers thus far…

This trailer is Brilliant, spectacular, and inspiring. Every scene from the slow introduction to the intense battles where meshed together awesomely along with the music, it was a master piece of work. The cast is great, and i am glad to see Leonard Nimoy in this film. “James T Kirk was a great man, but that was another life” this quote catches me every time, i just love it.

I hope this reboot of the Star trek Franchise goes well and paramount carefully plays the characters and history right. I personally would like too see a darker version of Star Trek and not your standard stop and save everyone and all live on a ship and be juiced up on happy pills Star Trek.

For the many fans that grew up with Star Trek, and that new the James T Kirks, the Jean Luc Picards, the Benjomine Siscos and the Katherine Janways. We all are very loyal and utterly critical of Star Trek and its history, this new film is being put too the test with us and a measuring stick is being place almost. Unlike the new generation where they have not grown up with Star Trek and don`t understand; this film needs to be good and needs too catch the new generation and spark their interest. Right now, the new generation is like star tr … wii, or star tr .. Facebook. It is sad almost.

I am so eager to see this movie as well as a lot of you, just hope it is great and does not have that typical star trek box office flop syndrome.

Hey there, Matt.

Regarding your question about some resemblance of The Dark Knight score to the background music used in this latest Trek trailer….

Yes! I also commented about it on ComingSoon.net.
I initially thought some chords were similar to he leitmotif of the orig Batman Begins score.

Phew.
Glad to know it wasn’t only me who noticed a Batman-esque sound in this Star Trek trailer.

_N_r_chy on March 9, 2009 at 10:07 am

On another note…
I dunno if anyone would concur with me on this,
but I deem this Trek trailer a few notches better than that third trailer for Terminator Salvation.

This latest Trek trailer just had all the tease-worthy scenes efficiently cut & effectively mashed together!

I’m not being biased or anything.
(I’m a huuuuge Bale addict, actually. Then, at the same time, I’m a middling Trekkie).
But there’s just a whole new dimension of perpetually engaging epic-ness to this latest trailer for Abrams’ Star Trek that trumps McG’s latest trailer by a few notches.

After about 3 times of constant re-watching of the Terminator trailer, it becomes boring already.
I realized on the contrary, that even after a long while, all the Trek trailers (even the teaser) were still engaging. Never ceases to be a fun watch, to say the least.

The first and formost problem I see with the new movie is that James T Kirk never learned how to drive a car. An issue addressed in the old serious. It makes me wonder what other mistakes in history the director has made.

Looks totally awesome and this is coming from a guy that’s been a fan for better than 30 years. The franchise needed a makeover and if they needed to tweak the timeline to get away from cardboard sets, so be it.

The music is just a place holder. It isn’t Giacchino’s score, it’s actually called “Freedom Fighters” and it’s by an outfit called Two Steps From Hell which makes music used in marketing. You can listen to a piece of the actual score by going to startrekmovie.com, there is a bit of it in the background.

Tedious on March 17, 2009 at 12:38 am

@Dan H – how are you so sure that he “learned” to drive a car? Trailer 1 showed him operating a vehicle for a few hundred yards, and not very successfully. Did he make more than ONE turn?

By that criteria, I learned to drive a car in about thirty-five seconds on my first day of driver’s ed. My only instruction was: Leave the parking lot and take a right.

The driving force for ST series and movies has always been Gene Roddenberry’s uncanny vision of the future. Look back at the early 60’s TV series which may seem corny with today’s standards, but were revolutionary back then.

Having said the above, I really hope there’s something from that vision in this movie, otherwise it will turn out to be another fast-action adventure filled with special FX which will be forgotten hours after viewing it….

Having been brought up seeing ST and other series/movies as a kid (without having been to a convention!), it would really be a shame if the whole ST “universe” was to end just for the box office income of one movie.

My 0.02 cents!

I do think J.J is going in the right direction with the franchise/ from trailers to pics and reading the Star Trek countdown Comics this looks very promising and as it takes place in an alternate timeline, the writers ect.. can do what they want with stories ect. I became a fan of Star Trek after watching Star Trek IV TVH and became a big fan of the next gen. and the last 4 Seasons of Deep Space Nine after that, I started losing total interest in Trek as the stories were being re-hashed over and over be it a different series, as for the movies out of all them Star Trek 2 and First Contact were my favs, but anyway I do beleieve the franchise needed new breath fed into it , now you see berman and crew ect… did a good job to an extent but unfortunately it was to late trek was dead, hence now theres new writers directors and now the franchjise has a chance to go on regardless of the old fans, the new ones will carry it on, over at screen rant I had to laugh regarding all these purists fans going on about the look of the ship, well as I seen it… it still has the same basic design as for the interior, the Bridge corridors ect needed to be updated to hold up the stories drama ect… all the basic crew has the same seats stations ect.. the only thing that gets me is the fans that are acting like an 80 yr old fart who is stuck in there ways and cannot accept change, well I am sorry but they obviously didn’t follow Roddenberry’s concept change is inevitable and to move forward is change the way the fans are acting like a child that doesn’t comprehend that, if there is no change and moving forward, guess what Trek is going to remain as it did dead canceled series i.e Enterprise failing box office Ie Nemesis (even though it wasn’t a bad movie) by then it was to late the franchise failed fan base was tired of same stories continuity violations ect…. so what I am saying even though long winded give the movie a chance see what happens instead of all the nit picking i,e the nacelles to big ect who cares its a sci-fi show its not reality as some of the fans are acting like it is.

A fun fact:
Gene Rodenberry took the name for Captain James T. Kirk from a real person name James T. Kirk of Kirkland MO. He was the third wagon master/captain that came out west.
