James Cameron wants to shoot 3-D drama!

In a fascinating interview about 3-D and it’s past, present and future in the film industry - James Cameron tells Variety that he thinks Atonement (!) would have been better in 3-D.

To prove this point, he is itching to direct a drama in 3-D as his follow-up to the much anticipated Avatar

Right now, 3-D is pretty much being used for films that have some spectacle in them, whether it’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” or “U2 3D”; nobody’s talking about using it for domestic dramas. But there are people wondering whether it will actually enhance the impact of character-driven stories. What are your thoughts on how 3-D changes the experience of watching actors act?

I plan to shoot a small dramatic film in 3-D, just to prove this point, after “Avatar.” In “Avatar,” there are a number of scenes that are straight dramatic scenes, no action, no effects. They play very well, and in fact seem to be enhanced by the stereo viewing experience. So I think this can work for the full length of a dramatic feature. However, filmmakers and studios will have to weigh the added cost of shooting in 3-D against the increased marketing value for that type of film.

Cameron, as long as your working - I’m happy. Drama - Comic Book Movie - Sci-Fi - Horror - whatever! Just don’t leave us for a decade again!

  1. Oh come on, James. You’ve broken the boundary already, several times(aliens, terminator 2, titanic)  damn man.  What is your obsession with always wanting to push the boundary..just so you can be that guy “oh my god, hes that innovative director!”
And besides….a 3D drama, its not just for epics?  seriously….thats the dumbest idea ever.  what kinda drama id have to see, but generically, if its not about the spectacle, the “ride”, then 3D most likely wont work for the kind of movie he’s talking about.
