Isla Fisher has come an awful long way since starring in Aussie soap opera Home and Away. Next up on the pint-sized red head’s quest for super stardom is the lead role in The Secret Dream World of a Shopaholic, an adaptation of Sophie Kinsella’s best selling chick lit Confessions of a Shopaholic.
After an ill-advised turn as Shaggy’s girlfriend in Scooby-Doo, Fisher has mixed up her resume by working with talaneted filmmakers (David O. Russell in I Heart Huckabees and Scott Frank in this year’s The Lookout) and taking on broader roles in films with commercial appeal (Wedding Crashers, Hot Rod).
Shopaholic will see Fisher team with fellow Aussie PJ Hogan in what his her first leading lady role. It should be noted that Hogan’s My Best Friend’s Wedding not only propelled Cameron Diaz onto the A-list but also solidified Julia Roberts as the ‘Queen of the Romcom’ back in the mid-nineties. We can also thank him for the brilliant Toni Collette.
Hogan has been in director jail since his version of Peter Pan – a movie so visually gorgeous and tonally spot on – bombed back in 2003. Both director and star seem like excellent fits for the material so, guys, if your girlfriend drags you to this don’t be surprised if you actually enjoy it.
