Is a Hooligan directing The Punisher sequel?

po_114821.jpgThe last we heard on The Punisher 2 was that Thomas Jane had pulled out of the movie and the hunt was on to find a new director and lead star. Superhero Hype are reporting the name who they believe is the front runner to direct the picture… Hooligans director Lexi Alexander.

If this turns out to be true, then by my reckoning this is the first time a woman has directed a big comic book movie… although I could be wrong.

No word yet on who will play Frank Castle.

The site has also got word from Canada.com that shooting for the film may take place in Montreal.

I don’t buy this rumor for a second. Nothing about this woman’s bio says a studio would have confidence in her for an action movie, especially not one as hardcore as Punisher. The closest to action she’s gotten is a double for the Mortal Kombat world tour. Not inspiring.
And not to be sexist, but I don’t see a female director doing an action piece, and certainly not one of this sort. I’m sure there’s been one or two -only Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, K-19, Strange Days) comes to mind- but those were some shitty movies.

At any rate no studio would trust a multi-million dollar (no doubt) summer release to somebody whose only flick of note was a crappy Elijah Wood vehicle that nobody even saw. I mean, how the hell do you make the leap from a movie about juvenile-delinquent British footballers (ooh, there’s a scary concept!) to a comic book movie about a guy who kills criminals? Only Paramount would be so stupid as to make a move like this, and they’re not the ones producing the Punisher franchise.

This is an entertaining rumor, for all of five seconds, but it’s nothing more.
