If you have ever loved STAR TREK, read this!

In Star Trek opening in the U.K. at midnight tonight and spreading wide from tomorrow, Bruce Greenwood’s Captain Christopher Pike looks down on a cocky James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and tells him “Your father was a Starship Captain for 12 minutes, he saved 800 lives. I dare you to do better”. You know, that awesome line of dialogue which seriously runs against “FIRE EVERYTHING” and James T. Kirk was a great man, but that was another life” as the money-making lines, the ones which you find yourself remembering and reciting for days.

Well imagine me as Bruce Greenwood. “Watchmen, the most faithful comic book adaptation of all time, the one YOU were clamouring to be made for years made only $182 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million from those of you who could be bothered to see the movie. I DARE YOU TO DO BETTER WITH STAR TREK!”.

Despite how mainstream Star Trek looks and how much promotion they are giving it, the film still needs your help folks. You have been with us for the three years this film has been in production. Obsessed With Film has followed this project since J.J. Abrams’ first annoucement as the producer, the first sign of a reboot, all the casting, the first trailer leak, the first word of a review etc. You have certainly had your say, you’ve heard my say and we’ve all enjoyed listening to it.

But now it’s time to put your words into action. Star Trek is a phenomenal film, it truly is. Taken from my review last week…

Whether you have ever loved any incarnation of Star Trek, whether you have loved Serenity, Battlestar Galatica, Star Wars or even if you are new to any of those franchises. Your going to love this. Star Trek is the perfect platform for a newbie and just like over the past decade comic books have become cool, now so will Star Trek. And fanboys shouldn’t become bitter about it, they should embrace it because this series should now live long and prosper and there’s more than enough here to satisfy what you have come to expect from this franchise.

I DARE YOU TO SEE THIS.

We failed on Watchmen, it deserved better. Don’t let the same happen to Star Trek, which has truly never been this good. This film series has so much potential for future good but you have to go and see it to make the magic happen. The movie will be buried at first film otherwise and you will only piss and moan if they decide not to make anymore. NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

We failed on WATCHMEN? The film simply didn’t work as an overall motion picture experience for anyone unfamiliar with the book, and the constant barrage of nude male bodies certainly didn’t help its chances at all.

That was 300, the nude male bodies movie?

I loved WATCHMEN. For whatever it’s failings were, we got we wanted… WATCHMEN on the big screen, mostly uncompromised.

Is the film better then “Wrath of KHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN”?

Matt Holmes on May 6, 2009 at 8:37 pm

No, probably not better than Khan but that movie has almost singled the pinnacle of Trek, the moment where even for none Trek fans, they can see why we like it.

The new Trek movie though is probably the most accomplished. Is that such a non-answer? I’m not sure how to even compare the two.

The new Trek is probably more remarkable.

“Star Trek, which has truly never been this good”

Matt, this time it wasn’t me confusing you with someone else. YOU actually had the nerve to say that. You’ve lost ALL credibility now!

@ JaySmack – Matt’s safe to say something like that. Against what does Abrams’ new film have to compete?? The original show sucked, Next Gen was okay but geeky, the other shows were lame, and all but two of the movies were pointless. This franchise has staggered around for forty years without any real direction … so Abrams’ accomplishment is probably not that hard of a feat.

There was no need for this film. It was all done. Now it’s just typical Hollywood tripe. Make something new. That will impress me. Don’t do what’s already been done. Be creative. I might be asking too much from writers and studio heads these days.

This Star Trek is great … Yes, I said it, great. It truly is the “Batman Begins” for the Trekies. Let us hope that the next one becomes as good as “The Dark Knight” …. I agree with Matt in everything he wrote.

And what’s up with “Watchmen”? …. I love that movie. Is a pitty that didn’t made more money …. I liked it more than the comic version.
