I sadly heard rumblings about Tobe Hooper directing an adaptation of Stephen King’s great novel From a Buick 8 many moons back, but today it’s been confirmed by Variety.
It’s sad because out of all of King’s currently unadapted works, this is one of those that has great potential. The movie is about those mysterious things in live that go unexplained and how obsessive people can get over trying to understand things that they can’t control.
“From a Buick 8″ centers on a mysterious Buick stored in a state trooper barracks. After one of the troopers dies, his son becomes obsessed with the mysterious vintage automobile.
The legendary George A. Romero had at one point been attached to the novel, and he would have done a terrific job too but he choose to do other things instead.
The movie is being produced by Moonstone Entertainment and….get this…. AMICUS Entertainment. Yes that’s right, it’s the first big movie in the recent revival of the forgotten cult British studio, who once again will be competing with their great rivals Hammer Horror (if you can call straight-to-internet a competing) for the same audience.
So then we are left with Hooper. The guy who brought us two good movies (the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist) then an awful lot of crap. His 2004 movie The Toolbox Murders was a painful film, from a man who clearly has lost all sense of how to terrify an audience.
The script comes from unknown actor Johnathon Schaech and his writing pal Richard Chizmar. Hands up if you think a Schaech might end up with a major part?

I dont understand why they would do that. Hooper sounds fine and all but when it comes down to it they just need not worry about this film. YET! King needs to get off that backside of his and put forth some real effort to get the Dark Tower epic put together. That series ties in so many books together from King (including From a Buick 8). Why not do the biggest and best and then branch off from there.
