The trailer for Sherlock Holmes just didn’t do it for me I’m afraid, I have no idea how such a prestigious series got into the hands of Guy Ritchie but he’s completely out of his depth tackling these iconic characters. I do like the casting of Robert Downey Jr though and he’s a reason to see it if nothing else.
I look forward to seeing him and Jude Law challenge each other as Holmes and Watson, I like the comradery they had together in the all too brief footage. Their chemistry could make or break the movie.
I’ve tracked down these two one-sheet posters from Yahoo Movies which I cleverly deduced would be interesting to my dear readers…
Not a great amount of effort put into these but it’s early days yet, Christmas is still seven months away. I’m sure they are still trying to come up with the best plan for marketing a Sherlock Holmes picture which they actually expect to make HUGE business from, and not just be watched by a middle aged audience on a weekday afternoon on some obscure channel.

I have been a huge fan of Downey Jr. since his start in the 1980’s. I am proud to see his career in such a period of revival. However, Basil Rathbone is and will always be THE definitive Sherlock Holmes. I watched the Rathbone/ Bruce SH movies ad nauseum as a child and own the entire collection. Guy Ritchie is completely out of his element and completely wrong for this film. I had hope for this film until I saw the dreadful trailer. Oh well, time to slip in my copy of Sherlock Holmes and the House of Terror.
wheres the cap? the signature holmes suit and cap? dont know if i like the poster for holmes
Blah, blah, blah. . .i’m old and grumpy. That’s what you guys sound like to me. Now, I’m not a huge fan of Ritchie, Snatch being the one exception, everything else he has done has been kind of meh to me, but I’m all for putting some new life into Sherlock Holmes. The old school Holmes simply would not work in this day and age. He was too smart to put it bluntly for all the moviegoers of this age in film. They had to spice it up some. Personally, I think Downey is a great cast and can’t wait to see Mark Strong as the bad guy. I’m excited for it and I found the trailer to be quite fun. Looks like its more of a comedy/action as opposed to a crime/drama type thing, which I think will work well with today’s viewers and help the movie succeed.
This holmes is more true to the original character. He was written as very messy, yet obsessive compulsive. Also he was very atheletic too. He was written as being very knowledgable in martial arts. But the “attention grabbing holmes” that downey portrays does seem not as true to form.

Actually, far from being “old and grumpy”, I am 28 years old. Age is irrelevant. I simply know a good movie from an overblown mess. But I do agree with you that the “old school” Holmes would not work in this era of cinema. It’s definitely a sign of the times when one of the most cerebral characters in literary history has to be dumbed down for the illiterate masses. Your explanation for the style of the Ritchie’s Holmes is exactly the reason that, when it comes to movies, I watch the classics 90% of the time. Modern day moviemaking (with its remakes, sequels, reboots) has become a complete farce.
