HELLBOY 3 to star the Universal Monsters?

It’s been exactly a year and two days since Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro came out with this killer quote which got horror fanboys all over the world extremely excited. This came shortly after Hellboy found a new home at Universal Pictures…

“I must say that I’m having a great experience right now at Universal, because I find that their understanding of Hellboy as a possibility is so great. My hope is that if everything goes well and we continue [the franchise], Hellboy can start fighting the Universal monsters! I would love to see that”.

Man I remember when he said that. I’m such a Universal horror geek I remember getting so excited that day just thinking about Hellboy going up against the likes of Frankenstein and The Wolf Man.

Then things went quiet which was to be expected as del Toro was busy with Hellboy 2.

Now one year later, Mike Richardson the head of Dark Horse Entertainment (who produce Hellboy) has come out with a similar quote to the IESB.

I think it will happen. Hellboy 3 will feature the Universal Monsters, I’m almost convinced of it.

Frankenstein is a must but then you have to think about the other properties. We know already of a Wolf Man film from Mark Romanek which might stop that character from appearing in the film (although that film will have been released well before work on Hellboy 3 begins) and there are many movies with Dracula and The Creature from the Black Lagoon currently been made.

It might not be so easy to weave those characters in without the potential threat of upsetting other directors and producers at Universal.

Still it’s a very cool idea. I would love to see it happen and after the dissapointment that Stephen Sommers made with a similar idea in 2004 with Van Helsing, this could be the one that brings the movie in our heads to life.

By the way, you should check out the new Hellboy site and look at the concept designs and images over there for next summer’s movie. Very cool.

  1. That kind of thing could undoubtedly end up being cheesy and contrived, but my inner fanboy says: “Yay! Universal monsters versus Hellboy! Hell yeah!”

  2. How about Hellboy vs. Hannibal Lector?

  3. As long as frankenstein isnt retarded looking. Every film adaptation I have ever seen of the character makes him out to be some half retarded, inept, lethargic, barely capable of walking, devoid of logic powerhouse.

In the book he was extemely capable and smart, he learned very quickly and as a result of his augmentation was intuitively athletic, running down the side of a mountain in one scene.

The only time Ive ever seen someone stick to the originality of the character is in Dean Koontz Frankenstein story line.

  4. I’m sorry but… i thin that Hellboy fighting monsters like: dracula, frankenstein, the creature from the black lagoon, etc… would be vary stupid and cheesy, Hell boy fights mythicle creatures not stupid 1950’s monsters. The story line in Hellboy 2 was vary good and smart, In the third movie They should have Hellboy fighting the demon side of himself. I take back that I’m sorry I said in the begining.

P.S. One of the twins that he has in the third movie should be good and the other one should be evil. That all seeing monster thing in the second movie said that Hellboy will bring destruction on the earth, I think that what the monster means by that is, one of the twins that HE brings into the world will bring destruction on the earth.

  5. I think Hellboy should fight a giant, cored-out butthole.
