He-Man returns!

lateshow-aug01-heman02.jpgI was holding off from posting this the other day as I truly didn’t believe it, but we now have official confirmation from Variety so I guess it’s true.

Joel Silver is producing a new live-action movie of Masters of the Universe for Warner Brothers.

Currently talks are under-way between Mattel (the toy company who created the characters) and Warners, with the co-writer of David Goyer’s upcoming “Green Arrow in Prison” movie Super Max is said to be on board. His name is Justin Marks, and I’m hearing he’s the hottest geek around Hollywood right now.

The franchise has been reimagined by the producer and the writers and pitched to Mattel as a classic good vs. evil battle, using the kind of visual effects strategy employed in “300.” A warrior is touted as the last hope of a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor. Many of the characters in the Middle Earth-like universe will be informed by the mythology created in the four different cartoon series done since the 1980s.

The 1987 version of Masters of the Universe is one of my favourite movies of all time. I know it’s absolutely ridiculous but I must re-visit that damn film about three times a year, I can’t get enough of it. Frank Langella’s extraordinary performance as Skeletor is what keeps drawing me back the most, they are never going to get someone to fill his shoes.

So there you have it. He-Man is returning and this time it would seem that it’s definitely going to happen. Thoughts?

I can’t believe you love Masters of the universe Matt, even when I was ten I hated that movie for being such a cop out, I mean IT WAS SET ON EARTH FOR FUCK SAKE, and don’t get me started on why no Battlecat. I did like He-Man and Skeletor but that was it, as a whole it was such a poor movie on all levels, you know I like my dumb movies too but it couldn’t even entertain me on a basic shallow kind of way. I hope the new movie will be more accurate this time round, and they better have Battlecat thats all im saying.

I think the thing with me was I was a fan of the movie before I became a fan of the cartoon.

I have a feeling this will be kept more in line with the animated series so I think you will be in look.

I can’t believe I love it either… but I just can’t get enough of it. Fuck knows why. Maybe it’s because it’s a bad movie that thinks it’s an epic one… or because there is so much potential in it (love the set designs, Skeletor etc.)

Frank Langella was the saving grace of Masters of the Universe. I remember seeing the movie in the cinema when I was just a little kid and I will always love it.

I really hope that whoever makes the new He Man movie has the good sense to bring back Frank Langella as Skeletor, because I know that fans (including myself) would really appreciate that. He in my opinion played the best bad guy ever to have graced the screen.

It would make no sense to get a new actor to play Skeletor because he in my opinion is the only actor who can really nail that role.

Jack Nicholson wanted to reprise the role of the Joker and was never asked. I do hope that the same mistake is not made by not asking Frank to dawn the makeup and cape again (if he wants to play the role again that is).
