Has Joaquin Phoenix retired?

E! have posted a very strange video interview with two time Academy Award nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix, who says, extremely deadpan that he has quit acting to follow his music passion.

He’s done with movies apparently. The whole interview feels extremely staged but we’ve always know Phoenix to be a serious guy, he’s not one to goof around like this.

Watch the video and you decide. Real or fake announcement?

Now ever since his amazing portrayal of Johnny Cash in WALK THE LINE, an amazing step up for him as a performer… I’ve been shocked at how his career has gone forward.

Roles in two very ordinary drama’s WE OWN THE NIGHT and RESERVATION ROAD last year, and then TWO LOVERS which is getting NO LOVE from anywhere right now, are hardly the career boost actors usually receive post Academy recognised movies.

Phoenix has no other roles upcoming, his agents aren’t trying to link him with anything. Maybe he is serious. Maybe he is done. Maybe after playing his idol, Johnny Cash, he has nowhere to go and is sick of the industry?

If that’s true, we are loosing a great screen actor. But let’s hope he is quitting to make himself happy because he sure doesn’t look happy in that video!

if you can’t respect that/ your whole perspective is wack

i felt scared for the guy with the mic when joaquin was all like ‘why are you laughing at me?’

What a fucking cunt. Man, it must be a bitch being a friend of Joaquin Phoenix in real life. Look at him wrong over drinks at a bar, and there’s going to be a crying session in the parking lot, or a fist fight.

Note to Joaquin – Give the “tortured artist/genius” act a rest. I realize you think that your performance as Johnny Cash has made you some sort of demi-god, but to be you’ll always be Merrill, swinging away at glasses of water in order to defeat ridiculous aliens.

Oh, and that wasn’t a compliment, douche bag.

Fake or not, I thought it was funny.

I hope he’s gone personally. The only movie that I liked him in was Walk the Line. I liked Gladiator the movie, but hated him in it. All his emotions always seem forced to me.

He looks off his scone!

The guy has had substance abuse issues he’s obviously still dealing with them.

He’s probably serious … FOR NOW, but who knows how long it will hold. He looks MESSED UP here – “off his scone” as someone else said. And I’m not sure the “tortured artist” thing is an act. I think there’s something to be said about watching your brother die – I’m sure that’s prolly scarred him for life.

In both interviews I’ve seen him claim he’s leaving, he’s acted the same. It seems fake to me too.

Been there, done that. My personality went flat on me back in the ’70’s, I was a good’nuff student actor when, all of a sudden, I became introspective and withdrawn, lost my direction, my wife and all my motivation to do ANYTHING. I guess that’s what LSD …does to a person with a lot of energy, gregarious, showing promise of greater things to come etc.
Joaquin is now officially “Bad News” in Hollywood, after last night’s crater and smoking hole on “The Tonight Show” 2-11-2009
If that was an act, what is it aimed at establishing? Success can implode? Talent can disappear? Maybe, “I’ve made my money, so now I’ll just be a ZIT!”
