Last week we brought you a very positive script review from the folks over at Latino Review on the first of two Che Guevara movies to be shot by Stephen Soderbergh and starring Benicio Del Toro in the lead role.
That’s called The Argentine, and you can read that whole review here.
But for Guerilla, the review isn’t so positive….
Unfortunately, GUERILLA is not as good as THE ARGENTINE. In fact it is painfully boring, uninteresting and a massive disappointment. But the reason it gets it’s D rating is mainly because of what has been left out.
You see, GUERILLA picks up the story seven years later in Bolivia in 1966.
A lot happened in Che Guevara’s life in those 7 years between 1959 (after he helped overthrow Batista) and 1966.
Reading this script, it feels like there is a whole middle act or an entire movie missing. The ARGENTINE is part 1 and GUERILLA feels more like a part 3. It’s like going from Star Wars to Return of the Jedi without Empire Strikes Back.
For starters, we never see the relationship between Che and Fidel progress nor reach it’s climax. It was completely left out. In THE ARGENTINE we get the setup and beginnings of their relationship and that is where it ends.
There is lots, lots more over at Latino Review, but it is spoiler heavy. You can read it for yourself by clicking here.
I can’t understand why they would setup a killer story in the first movie but then leave tons of what they have built on, completely out of the second movie. Doesn’t make any sense to me.
The site claims “They didn’t even try“. Oh dear!
