GREATEST AMERICAN HERO films in July?

I don’t know anything about the popular 80’s t.v. show Great American Hero but the word from Moviehole which has got a few webmasters excited around the web today is that a movie adaptation is in the works, to begin filming in Arizona this July.

Casting calls are being shipped around Hollywood right now for the movie to be directed by Stephen Herek (DEAD LIKE ME, THE MIGHTY DUCKS) and written from a script by Chris Matheson (BILL & TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE) and Ryan Rowe (CHARLIE’S ANGELS).

I don’t know where this project has originated but if it’s actually ready to shoot, then you can’t help but wonder if the script has been picked up from the vault just to get a project off the ground because of the strike. No-word on which studio is going ahead with this thing as yet.

“Hero” is based on the classic TV show about Ralph Hinkley, a high school teacher. He is a good, decent, likeable guy who is selected by aliens to defend the Earth against Harvey Lundy, a remarkably dislikeable high school teacher who is the representative of a group of intergalactic strip-miners. But he doesn’t have to fight Lundy alone - he’s got a superhero suit that gives him super powers.

Never heard of the show but looking at that image, there’s only one guy who you immediately think of… Owen Wilson.

Here’s the opening credits to the original show. How cheesy is that film song. How on Earth did this last three seasons and some 40-odd episodes?

  1. I vaguely remember this show as a young kid (5 or 6). I think it did as well as it did because it didn’t take itself seriously. If I remember correctly, the main character lost the operator’s manual for the suit, so he manages to do good with nothing more than good intentions, luck, and his more competent handlers.
