I wasn’t lying last night when I said Gerard Butler was a man in demand. Just a day after news of his casting in the lead role of the action movie Game comes word from Variety (via Slash Film) that the actor has been tapped up for Brian De Palma’s prequel to The Untouchables.
It’s pretty obvious with Butler being…
A) An actor quickly becoming a movie “star”
and
B) Scottish
that he has nabbed the role of Cop Jimmy Malone, played superbly in the original by Scottish actor Sean Connery in an Oscar winning performance all those years ago. Although it has to be said, Butler’s acting style is nothing like Connery’s (note… I said style and not talent because Butler is certainly talented) but then again Brian De Palma cast Nicolas Cage in the Al Capone role that Robert De Niro made famous… so go figure.
During the Cannes Film Festival where the news was leaked, Butler is said to have called the script for The Untouchables: Capone Rising “unbelievable”. The script for the movie was written by the duo Brian Koppleman & David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen, Runaway Jury) for those taking notes.
I still say the movie has “trouble” written all over it but at least with Butler involved, there’s at least one actor who I would be quite happy to pay my money to see on screen.

Isn’t Jimmy Malone an Irish cop? :)
But, seriously.. I LOVED the Untouchables and Gerard Butler IS perfect in playing the younger version of the character!! :) I’m so stoked for Gerry and all his success, I’ll be much anticipating these upcoming films!
Yeah but Connery was Scottish… so what can you do? lol. It’s the weird way the movie industry works. It may be an Irish character but it’s Connery everyone see’s and remembers… so it has to be a Scottish actor to play him as a younger version.
