We are a few short days away from it marking six months since Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman left the video game adaptation of Gears of War and according to the film’s producer Wyck Godfrey we might soon hear who his replacement is…
“We’ve got our script on and a director we’re about to attach. We’ll hopefully make that early next year for the summer of 2010,” said Godfrey.
After dropping out of the Escape from New York remake, Wiseman has a completely free schedule so they may have gone back to that well again. The name of Alfonso Cuaron is also getting branded around a lot but I think that’s more out of hope than any expectation.
Out of the big five video games (or at least I class them the big 5) Gears of War, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, God of War and Metal Gear Solid - I actually think this game has the least chance of being a good movie simply because of it’s key lack of plot (it’s typically a gamers game) but with Stuart Beattie (Collateral) the man writing the script, there’s at least some hope of a story being crafted there.
source - coming soon
I wasn’t keen on the game, no interest in the movie. I’d much rather see movies made from some of the other big hits. In order I am most looking forward to movies from games:
- METAL GEAR SOLID. I know it’s somewhere in the pipeline already, but MGS the PSOne game was pretty much a frickin’ movie to start with! This has been crying out to be made for the past 10 years.
- HALO. I think this, like the ADVENT CHILDREN, would only appeal to people who are familiar with the game. But there are a lot of people who fall into that category so it’s a sure thing for a profit if it gets made.
- THE SIMS. Now… before you laugh - I think there’s definite potential for an hilarious comedy here! Think about it, a series of shorts (they could connect in someway if you like) showing different Sim families. One morning, they wake up and… “WOOOOOOAH - our one story home just got a whole new floor!”. It could involve stuff like how they handle the emotion of their lives being controlled by a higher being.

THE TRUMAN SHOW might have beat THE SIMS to the punch there.
Could work but it would need some real clever writing to keep our interest for the full length of a feature.

Great game. Hopefully it won’t be a bad movie. Wiseman would be a fitting helmer.
