FRIDAY THE 13TH gets director

Jason VoorheesFrom a creative point of view, Platinum Dunes have made another made decision regarding their upcoming remake to FRIDAY THE 13th.

They have hired German director Marcus Nispel to helm the remake, the guy who previously directed the remake of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE and this year’s viking flop PATHFINDER.

You can see Dunes’ thinking behind it. Four years ago with Nispel behind the helm, TCM made $100 million worldwide for New Line Cinema and cost less than $10 million to make.

If FRIDAY THE 13TH does the same, then Platinum Dunes will be very happy indeed.

The problem for us film fans is that TCM wasn’t a good film and PATHFINDER was crapped on by nearly everyone (I haven’t seen it yet). The first bad decision the guys behind this film made was hiring the writers who brought us FREDDY vs. JASON to scribe the script some months back.

Same old rubbish, from the same old hacks.

Shooting begins in the ‘winter’.

First Halloween, now this. Is nothing sacred anymore?

And I bear Nipsel no malice, but so far he hasn’t really created anything of any real value. TCM was a michael Bay project, so that’s Strike One against Nipsel in my book.
Visually Pathfinder was pretty good, atmospheric as hell, in a 300 kind of way –though thankfully without all the so-mo camera work. The Vikings truly were presented as more demonic than human, so at least the director got the tone right. Problem is that’s ALL he got right.

Narratively it was a complete mess. The director said he wanted to create a “pocket-epic.” He failed on both counts. It was too long to be a “pocket” anything, and not deep enough, long enough, engaging enough or smart enough to be an “epic.”

While I liked the cinematography there’s no reason for me to EVER see that movie again, and I have to wonder what reason there was to make it in the first place.
