I always thought Daredevil was the one that really got away from Marvel. Here’s a superhero, not to disimilar to Batman, who fights justice because of a childhood incident – but actually maybe goes one further than Batman by studying and putting away criminals behind bars with his work as a lawyer by day.
Matt Murdock never rests.
They got a terrific actor to play him in Ben Affleck five years ago but sadly they didn’t choose the right director, though I’m of the opinion that Mark Steven Johnson’s director’s cut of the film was not without it’s merits.
I can’t believe at this point that Kevin Smith hasn’t pitched for a sequel. Having wrote the character for the comic books, played a cameo in the original film and of course being tight friends with Affleck – I’m so surprised they haven’t got this character back on the big screen where he deserves.
Maybe it’s something they have in the pipeline for the future but by the sounds of things they are going to have to be quick. Fans at the Comic Con at the end of last month might have given Frank Miller the idea to reinvent the character himself, something he did in the comics in the 80’s.
It was Death Race star Jason Statham who was first asked about the character and he immediately clicked to the idea according to The LA Times…
“Absolutely, just give me the chance, I would love to be Daredevil.”
Though he would be clearly more suited to play Bullseye, Statham is a very popular leading action star often dubbed this generation’s version of “Bruce Willis“.
Willis himself made a very convincing hero in Unbreakable, could a more softly spoken Statham work as Matt Murdock? Would he work as the brilliantly ambitous and righteous young lawyer?
Frank Miller just happened to be on that same roundtable, and said about Statham…
“I think he should be Daredevil too.”
If Miller wanted to go with Daredevil, as far as I’m aware, he could do it. Marvel Studio’s I believe will own the character and not Fox, if he could pitch a movie at Marvel – it could get the reimagining treatment much like how The Incredible Hulk came back this summer.
He isn’t a character with wild superhero powers, or outrageous villains. It could be a tightly contained movie, a character that could easily exist like Iron Man. This series could replace The Punisher franchise which Marvel have also dropped the ball with.
The only stumbling block is the amount of tentpole releases at Marvel but watch this space. After The Spirit, I think Frank Miller is going to be around for a very long time… we know he has the Raymond Chandler adaptation on his mind with Clive Owen – and undoubtedly a version of The Dark Knight Returns somewhere in the future.
But Daredevil has to be itching away at him.

I worry about Miller, the Spirit just looks like a bomb to me. He amy have a tough time getting anything off the ground if the Spirit falls flat.
“They got a terrific actor to play him in Ben Affleck five years ago..”
Are you kidding me? Affleck is a horrific actor. There is a small group of people that everytime i see them i don’t see the character i just see them. Morgan Freeman is one.. he is always morgan freeman in everything. Affleck is awful, daredevil was awful and i think Statham is another one of those actors that i just don’t see the character i just see him.
You need to get an actual character actor to be the role of daredevil. I think Statham is more of a goon than an actual actor. I haven’t been impressed by his acting skills since Snatch.
Who Knows… in the end they won’t listen and i won’t care.
Statham has been called this generations Bruce Willis?
By who?
And I think Miller was simply trying to be polite (overly so!). Miller might be a good screenwriter for a Daredevil revamp, but I’d keep his weird ass as far from the director’s chair as possible.
Sin City made him think being a director was as easy as drawing a comic. From the way Spirit is looking he’s in a wake-up call.
Rodriguez isn’t there to hold his hand this time.
He’d probably be a good DD, but a not so good Matt Murdock.
Yeah, Miller “Might never work in this Town again” after the Spirit comes out, it does look like it’s got BIG PILE OF SHIT! written all over it.
