Frank Miller has butchered THE SPIRIT.

Ah, Mr. Frank Miller – I didn’t realise your solo directing debut was actually for a commercial. Good job on the weird psychedelic images, the “beer commercial” music and the over the top short story of a guy who is attracted to all kinds of women.

Is this a commercial for The Spirit, a new kind of deodorant?

Because this can’t be a trailer for a movie, can it?

That is just bizarre.

If you are at all a fan of Will Eisner’s original incarnation of The Spirit universe then it’s officially time to get pissed at this. As has happened so many times in Frank Miller’s writing career in comics, his own desire for promoting his own voice through other people’s material has resulted in an absolute mess which does nothing but appease Miller’s weird artistic taste.

Is this really the movie you have been itching to make as your long awaited solo film directing debut?

Everything seems awkward, the backgrounds are horrible… it’s so fucking boring. Nothing is going on, what is Denny Colt’s motivations here? He is suppose to be a detective coming back from the dead to fight crime in the shadows, not some kind of porn star who is trying to bed as many women as he can.

This is insulting. What the fuck have they done with The Spirit?

Oh no, I really hope Miller hasn’t fucked this up!!! this is probably the only chance at a good big budget SPIRIT movie.
The trailer has been removed so I havn’t seen it Matt! FUCK this character is very dear to my heart and i’m praying Miller hasn’t gone up his own arse with it! Maybe he should has done a couple of other films before he tackled this.

Geez, it’s only a The Shadow knock-off. It’s not like it’s Superman or something. Why is anyone getting bent out of shape? Most people didn’t even know this character existed before Miller announced he was making a movie about him.

It’s only a stupid, really old, comic book, and filmamkers can’t ben held hostage to fanboys who jerk off to their old back issues of this or that comic book –they need to be able to make what THEY think is cool and marketable.
I never read The Spirit, and don’t give a crap about it. The movie needs to be accessible and that means playing up the hot girl angle and special effects angle and not trying to make some live-action straight-off-the-page translation of the comic that only a few die-hards will like.
Long as the girls are hot who gives a crap what the fanboys think? I say good for Miller for trying to make something more broad-based. Reinvent this thing for the 21st century. Toss out all the silly comic book stuff and try to something that will entertain people. Take it on it’s own merits, and don’t try to require it adhere to the source material.

Terrible trailer. Can’t speak for the film yet but after seeing that trailer, not only has it killed a lot of my interest in the film, but it just looks unappealing to me.

Now i am quite into comic books but have never read a spirit comic and all i know about the character is that he’s some kind of detective. From that trailer i can only ask what the hell is this movie about? How is this accessible to the non-fans. All the non-fans will just think ‘oh the this movie must be just for the die-hard fans cause its certainly not explained very clearly’ and of course die-hard fans are going to bitch and complain about it not being ‘the’ spirit. What were they thinking?

I can’t judge the movie yet (never do before i’ve seen it), but i don’t see how that trailer could inspire any confidence in it.

Poor Matt. Imagine if Nick Cage was in this as well. You’re head would have exploded by now :p

To be perfectly honest I was not familiar with “The Spirit” until I started to do some research on it and it began to spark my interest. I love what Miller did with Sin City, so that also played a role in my interest as well. Aside from that I’m not sure what to think of the film based on the trailer, other than the trailer made “The Spirit” seem like a one night stand kind of guy that is in competition with Sam Jackson’s character to see who can bang the most women and not get killed by them later on. Of course this is not true in terms of the actual story, but that is the impression I got from the trailer.

Even if the movie turns out to be less than stellar it might good for a laugh, or just pure mindless entertainment. :-P

Frank Miller is well known for his twisted(bad) artistic principles. About the only original work by Frank is his pulp fiction classic Sin City. As for anything else that bears his name, well it’s basically a perverted take on somebody else’s big idea. As far as unique plots with a subtle hint of morality and an idea of the human condition, that’s a tad over Franks head(say about a mile). Needless to say I am less than frigid toward his portfolio. In short if you know and hold dear The Shadow you might as well forget about seeing the movie, however if know and love Multi-Racial Love Fest or Two Guys Fifty Gals Frank Miller’s definitely the show to see.
