The Fast and the Furious franchise has spiraled quickly into awfulness. The first film was pretty enjoyable in a Point Break kind of way but its follow-up was poor. I’ve not seen Tokyo Drift and don’t have much desire to, so the rumours of a forth installment hasn’t got me too excited.
Mad About Movies is reporting that all the leading men from the previous films may unite for number 4. Vin Diesel, Tyrese, Paul Walker and Lucas Black aren’t exactly setting the world on fire at the minute – Diesel is the only one who has even been able to open a movie on his name alone but his recent choices haven’t been too shrewd.
Mad About Movies says:
Further rumours suggest that this time around, the boys will be hitting the pavement hard in Rio de Janeiro with a mix of classic American and Latin American muscle cars.
Rio is a great backdrop for a film. I’m sure most of you are familiar with City of God but there’s also a cracking documentary called Bus 174 – about a young man who takes a bus full of passengers hostage – that takes place in Rio. The film is tense as hell and provides a subtle social portrait of Brazil. Hopefully some of the South American magic will rub off on The Fast and the Furious 4… it’ll need it.

I loved Bus 174, superbly crafted documentary that really had you gripped.
The second in the franchise wasn’t that good, but the third I really enjoyed. I think you have to be into cars to get pulled into these films, after all they are much more the stars of the film.
Seeing the drift racing was pretty cool and I think they did some clever things to pull back from the second film with Tokyo Drift. However I’m just not sure a fourth will go that far.
The full rumour has quite a few stars coming back from the first three films, that means a pretty healthy budget, and I’m not so sure the fourth will get that sort of investment.
I hope so though, and with only muscle cars mentioned this time around it might be another good change of scenery for the car fans.
Hmmm, a Fast & Furious 4? What’s the proper response to that bit of news? Oh yeah, YAWWWN!
If you haven’t seen Tokyo Drift –don’t! It’s the same dumbass painfully predictable story written by a bunch of sheltered suburabanites who are playing out a delusional fantasy in which all of their shortcomings ar overcome and all their absurd dreams are realized. Starting with going to a foreign country and being immediately swept into the same spehere as some hot foreign girl who falls madly in love with them.
Of course these absurd fantasies always include some element of danger for these daydreaming scribes, since these idiots are cowards and losers in real life, they write stories in which they do what they’ve never done in their whole pathetic existence –stand up for themselves.
So there’s the predictable “heavy” some dude, who just so happens to be the boyfriend of the hot girl. The dude is an utter jerk who disrespects her and he’s the kind of lout she seems to be too sweet to even look at, yet she’s romantically involved with him because of the “dangerous” world he is part of, a world that the hero is drawn to, because he’s the best at it, although he has no real experince in it.
This worn out plotline is the same one damn near every teen love story has had since the Karate Kid. Nothing new or fresh. Except Lil’ Bow Wow makes a moderate ass of himself pretending he can act.
The best thing they could do for the F&F franchsie is to let it die. Because it’s damned sure killing the rest of us.
