Actual frames of film from the 6th Quentin Tarantino movie (if you count KILL BILL as one epic saga) have hit the web, giving us our first official look at INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS ,only half a year away now from likely to be playing in a theatre near you.

They come courtesy of Filmz.ru, though I have to give a shout out to Seb at Quentin Tarantino Archives for letting me know via e-mail…

Above is a very different looking Brad Pitt from a previously leaked photo from the set, showing him as a more distinguished and decidedly older looking Lt. Aldo Raine recruiting his team of INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS. We get to see his scar for the first time and it doesn’t disappoint.

Below is a glimpse at one of my favourite scenes from the script I read, possibly the most tensest part of the movie. A game of deception and identities. The image below shows Diane Kruger as film startlet Bridget Von Hammersmark, entertaining the German Nazi’s with a game of “who am I?”.

And in case you missed it, don’t forget to check out Seb’s excellent article Pop Culture Meets History: The story behind INGLORIOUS BASTERDS which was published on the site last week and is well worth your time!

I so hope that Tarantino returns to the form of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown. I thought DEATH PROOF was an absolute stinker while KILL BILL – while having some amazing fights and classic scenes – was also indulgent, overblown and full of unnecessarily wordy dialogue. What made it so disappointing, in DEATH PROOF’S case mainly, is that Tarantino should’ve moved on from the pop culture references so marvellously punctuated in PULP FICTION and towards a more classical style of filmmaking a’ la’ Christopher Nolan. Hopefully, ‘BASTERDS’ will be like JACKIE BROWN and a return to mature filmmaking, with brilliant and believable characters.

I think this film will be absolute shite! Tarantino shot his wad a long time ago.

@The Glove: a very succinct and accurate view. He promised greatness and his talent has somewhat disappeared up the fundamental orifice. ‘BASTERDS’ has a great cast and hopefully the script will be more economic and concentrate on telling a story rather going round the houses like the overblown KILL BILL. Perhaps all is not lost??

But the big question remains: has he crapped on his leg by rushing it? I mean, come on, it’s like a kid wanting to do ANYTHING to join his friends sleep over next weekend, what he’s done – promising to be in cannes a year on with a movie he hasn’t finished writing, cast or done anything on… But.. Paul Newman wrote and recorded the entire two hours+ score for King Kong in two weeks (I think it was) so it isn’t to say limited time HAS to equal failure, but really: Why the fuck couldn’t he just take the time he needed, and get the actors he actually wanted etc? I smell rushedness and not what it could have been. But I’d be happy to be proven dead wrong when I see it.

epleterte,

I once had the opinion that he had rushed it too but I actually think something changed in the process of him writing this movie.

For him, it stopped being about the action stars of yesteryear and turned more into characters of Tarantino’s own creation. The cast is pretty amazing, he has a worldwide legion of nationalities, some of the best working thesps in their respective countries right now.

He has sacrificed big names for actors who have something to prove. Either this or James Cameron’s movie will be the best high profile movie of next year, mark my words!

Matt,

I don’t want to read the screenplay but does Tarantino play his usual deconstructionist trick of telling the story every which way but linear? This works well with certain films but with a ‘Dirty Dozen’ genre film I’d like to see him tell a straightforward blood ‘n’ guts classic war movie!

Yeah it’s a little all over the place the narrative.

Think KILL BILL but as an ensemble piece. It’s nothing like PULP FICTION as the main thrust of the story is linear, like KILL BILL.

Cool – as long as it’s told in one film that’s sweet –but you never know with TarantEGO :-)
