A female version of Scarface is in development over at Warner Independent under the direction of Venezuelan director Jonathan Jakubowicz. The movie titled Queen of the South will be set in Spain and is said to reinvent the gangster genre by unusually having a female protagonist.
The story is based on Arturo Perez-Reverte’s bestselling novel and revolves around a Mexican woman who escapes to Spain after her drug mule boyfriend is killed, then becomes a drug kingpin and seeks revenge for her boyfriend’s murderers. Albert Torres did a rewrite of Hanna Weg’s script.
Now I can dig all that and it sounds pretty cool but then you hear the names that are up for the lead role and you start to get a little worried. Eva Mendes, Penelope Cruz and Jennifer Lopez.
Now can you seriously imagine any of them as a gun wielding gangster?
For a female version of Al Pacino’s Tony Montana character you need someone who is a little less glamorous and someone who is a little more tough and rugged. I mean casting Jennifer Lopez would be the death of this film, which has tons of potential if it can find the right female lead.

Jiuliana Margulies could do this part. She’s certainly bitchy enough. That Hispanic girl from Four Brothers might be a good choice. I can’t see Michelle Rodriguez doing a part like this. You need someone who exudes menace, and she doesn’t.
But a movie like this isn’t made to be taken seriously. So, assuming it even gets made, I guess it doesn’t really matter.

It is obvious you do not know anything of movies certainly not about books. I truly recommend that you start by educating yourself about the foreign cultures. And let me just give you a small introduction on it. First Secuestro Express which was Jakubowicz previous film became the most important film in Venezuelan history ( by the way Venezuela is a actually a country in south America) just for your knowledge, it gave an important contribution on showing both sides of the social discrepancy in the country and it’s biggest paid crime, which is the secuestros ( kidnapping). Second, Queen of the south Is the true story of a women called Teresa Mendoza she is the most famous legend in the Mexican history ever, it represents the most popular way of living culture in Latin America which is the drug dealing world, ( I assume your only contact whit Latino Culture is whit a waitress) She represents the human vulnerability of exile and the struggle in a world in which you have no choice but live to survive. So I guess I does matter if someone does have something important to say to the world !
Woody,
I have no idea what your post means mate, but I’m sure you have a point somewhere??????
Thanks for telling me Venezuela is a country in South America because I actually knew that already.
I live in the North East of England, the chances of me meeting a Latino waitress is very slim I can assure you!
Actually Matt, I think this chump may have been talking about me and not you. Either way his tone and attitude are WAY out of line. Allow me to check this guy.
First, I’ll repeat what I said in my post. This movie ISN’T made to be taken seriously!” Drug dealing females are a sexy idea, but it’s only an extension of the T&A-genre. Yiou never see Al Pacino’s naked behind in Scarface, you certainly won’t see Denzel’s in American Gangster, but I’m pretty sure you’ll see whatever actress’ takes this part partially or (Sain’t be Praised!) fully-nude!
And to say that a movie “became the most important film in Venezuelan history” is like saying Napoleon Dynamite became the most important film ever to come out of Nickelodeon. Drug dealers are prosecuted in the US, not made into folk heroes. And Mendoza is “the most famous legend in the Mexican history ever?” I suppose Pancho Villa and Santa Anna must be disapointed.
Venezuela (and Latin Ameica for that matter) hasn’t made any contributions of note to cinema, and I highly doubt this will be the first.
and being in Louisiana, and having lived in Texas for some years, I’ve had a hell of a lot of contact with hispanics; from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Venezuela. They’ve lived with the reality of the drug trade. Have you Woody? If you had then you know the drug cartels own those countries down there. So what “important” statement is this film going to make that the nightly news hasn’t already made?
BTW, nobody here wants or needs a world-geographby lesson from a smart-ass pundit with a foul attitude Woody. Since you obviously know nothing about American movie making or America I recommend you start by watching Citizen Kane…twice. You could watch literally millions of hours of great cinema and never hear a word of Spanish, or see a movie from, starring, or even set in Venezuela. My understanding of literature is fine, and so is Matt’s I imagine. It’s yours that needs expanding. From where I sit your knowledge of literature, and movies begins and ends with Venezuela, which to me means you know a lot about nothing.
This movie ISN’T important, the book isn’t either (I read a LOT and never even heard of it before this review) and if that wounds your pride – SO WHAT! Venezuela only has two exports: oil and cocaine. Nowhere in there do I see room for quality literature or movies.
Well, I honestly feel that if you need a real hard core female gangsta pick someone like who is not an actress give us female a chance.
I’ve always wanted to play the role of a female gangsta
the cool thing about it even in real life just my look many say they think about it twice before saying anything.
I am a wonderful person dont get me wrong I get along with many and can be nice to all but i feel i can play the role.

If they can just see that she was a little woman her description could go more to Eva Longoria , but since she doesn’t at all is like the girl we see in the book i like more it going to Eva Mendes , but im’ still waiting for the movie huh??
