Fantastic look at THE HOBBIT

I’ve watched both the extended versions of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and THE RETURN OF THE KING (for some reason, I always seem to leave out THE TWO TOWERS) this week, which is no small feat really. That’s 8 hours or so of film but revisiting it for the first time in a number of years, you really begin to remember how fantastic an achievement it is.

It’s not very often that a film project comes together so magnificently as LOTR. Some would argue it’s 20 odd years as their probably wasn’t anything like LOTR since the original STAR WARS trilogy. But even then, the LOTR scope seems bigger, the acting more refined, the themes more adult, the action more exciting… a trilogy that is closer to perfection.

STAR WARS will always have a special place in my heart but those extended versions of LORD OF THE RINGS are absolutely breath-taking and as a whole, it’s one of the best things ever put on film.

So I checked my inbox this morning and I notice a link to a fascinating article about THE HOBBIT that Entertainment Weekly are running with. It’s an absolutely terrific read and although you should know all this right now if you have read Obsessed With Film over the last 12 months, it still gives you all the facts in a nice manner and tells you everything you need to know.

Personally, as much as a draw returning to The Shire must be for Peter Jackson, I just can’t see it happening with him behind the helm. Too much crap has gone on, too many bad words spoken and I believe Jackson has probably buried the idea of directing another film in this universe.

He’s got other things to do now. He’s working on THE LOVELY BONES soon, then he has that TINTIN movie to work on and he’s working as executive producer on THE DAMBUTERS and has another fantasy epic he wants to bring to the big screen.

I believe his time with the hobbits could be over. He might return as Executive Producer with someone else at the helm, but I wouldn’t even expect that. Time to move on, I think.
