EXCLUSIVE: JUSTICE LEAGUE Updates

A while back we gave you news on WETA’s involvement with the Justice League movie. Now comes a follow-up of sorts.

We previously reported that the New Zealand based company would be creating costumes for the Leaguers but were unable to get details on who they’d be working with to design them.

Wonder no more because Marit Allen (Brokeback Mountain, Love in the Time of Cholera) is on board the film as costume designer. Allen already has some experience in the superhero field as she designed the miraculous stretching purple pants in Ang Lee’s Hulk.

It’s looks like WETA’s effects arm WETA Digital are still bidding with other houses - including Animal Logic (Happy Feet, The Matrix) - to do visual effects work on the film. They won’t be the principal house on the film, though, because that job has gone to Sony Pictures Imageworks with Ken Ralston (The Polar Express, Cast Away) acting as visual effects supervisor.

Ralston is a four time Oscar winner (can he donate one to Peter O’Toole?) and President of Imageworks.

The company have previously worked on the Spider-Man movies, Superman Returns, Monster House, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the upcoming Beowulf.

  1. Meh. Superman Returns’ effects were rubbery. The only hope is Beowulf pushed them along into improved effects. JL should have went with ILM. Pirates of the Carribean effects were 1000 times better than anything by Imageworks.

The costume designer doesn’t inspire any confidence either. This is the best they could do? Seriously? Kym Barrett is based out of Sydney isn’t she? What about Penny Rose (PotC)?

It sounds like WB went with the cheapest effects house and costume designer available. Not a good sign. Especially on top of the bargain basement cast names they’re throwing around. Very bad sign.

  2. Sony Pictures Imageworks is the principle effects house for JLA, THEY FUCKING SUCK! Total amatuer company. They charge double what Weta and ILM charge and their work is half as good as ILM’s and 1/4 as good as Weta’s. I don’t understand. Spiderman 3 had atrocious effects considering the budget and time they had. Compared to Transformers 155 million dollar budget and Return of the King’s 130 million dollar budget(and this was in 03).

Are suits this stupid they decide to waste money like this, it makes no sense. Why would you go to an effects house that not only charges a hell of alot more but also does subpar work. It doesn’t make sense. They want to keep the budget low so they go with an effects house that charges way more than the two best effects houses on the planet, WETA and ILM. Are they stupid? and they get shitty effects in return.
