EW thinks IRON MAN will make more money than THE DARK KNIGHT!

I know, your sick to death of me talking about fucking superhero movies but I couldn’t pass this story up.

ewsummermoviepreview.jpg

EW have gotten their staff together to compile a list of what they believe will be the top ten highest DOMESTIC (U.S. only) grossing motion pictures of 2008. The results have made for some very interesting readings…

1. Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (355.9 million)
2. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (310.8 million)
3. Hancock (280.4 million)
4. Wall-E (280.3 million)
5. Iron Man (267.7 million)
6. The Dark Knight (255.0 million)
7. Kung Fu Panda (244.6 million)
8. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (176.5 million)
9. The Incredible Hulk (147.2 million)
10. Tropic Thunder (146.6 million)

I’m not doubting that Iron Man is going to be a huge success and will probably end up somewhere around the $250 million mark if word of mouth is strong but I think The Dark Knight has a good chance of cracking $300 million.

Every God damn person on the planet has been talking about that movie seemingly non-stop for years now and when you add the huge fanbase that Batman Begins drew in ($205 million BUT I know SOOOOOO many people waited for DVD because they weren’t sure on the new franchise… but they sure as hell are now) and then adding the extremely popular character of The Joker (and the added numbers that will inevitably come because it’s Ledger’s last film) and I don’t see how Tony Stark has a chance.

Also the Hancock figures might be a little generous. Sure coming off the $250 million I Am Legend made has put Hancock in good timing but to say a movie like that is going to be more popular is pushing it. It’s nowhere near as easily accessible as the plot of the Francis Lawrence movie but the movie will be huge, no doubt about it.

I also wouldn’t rule out Get Smart from possibly breaking the top ten if it can catch on and audiences get what they are trying to do.

I would go with…

1. Indy IV

2. The Dark Knight

3. Wall-E

4. Iron Man

5. Hancock

What about you?

TDK may be the superior film, but it seems that Iron Man’s marketing is totally off the charts and that’ll spell the difference, IMHO.

aphexbr on April 24, 2008 at 10:54 am

I’m very sceptical of the Hancock figures – it has a good trailer but word of mouth is suggesting that the movie is derailed by a stupid twist partway through. If this is true, word of mouth should kill it before the $200m mark.

On the other hand, word has been nothing but positive about Dark Knight, even after the opening minutes were shown in IMAX. Add to that the ghoul factor of people wanting to see Heath Ledger’s last role and EW’s estimate might even be low.

The others look OK. Narnia will probably get some of the pro-Christian push that helped the first movie (and killed The Golden Compass). The Mummy and The Hulk will both depend on good reviews and good word-of-mouth but somewhere between $150m and $200m sounds about right.

I think everyone is underestimating how much money Indy 4 will make. Only 355 mill? They aren’t properly analyzing how much hunger for this movie there is.
First of all, it’s been 19 years since the last one. People are dying to see it. Two, the teaser trailer is by many estimates the MOST WATCHED TRAILER OF ALL TIME. It was viewed over 200 million times the first week! Third, even though the younger crowd isn’t as familiar with Indy as those over 25, the fact that Shia is in it will bring the hords of teeny girls to watch it.
They pretty much have all demographics covered. If the movie is a piece of trash (like say Phantom Menace) I’d put it around 400 mill. I mean c’mon, even Pirates 2 made over 400 mill and that movie was a piece of trash.
If Indy 4 is actually a great movie, then I predict 550 mill. Easy.
As for TDK vs Iron Man, it’s a close call. Sure Batman has more diehard fans, but Iron Man is more accessible to younger audiences. We’ll see.

Jack Ryder on April 24, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Iron Man will beat TDK easily.

People are tired of Batman and most non fan people (even fans) have dislike towards Ledger’s Joker. He looks too creepy, people won’t let their kids see it, etc.

The fact that we’ve never seen Iron Man before in ANYTHING will make the film a huge success. That or turn people away.

Nevertheless, it will beat TDK easily.

Iron Man’s got better toys and looks cooler than Batman.

Bedides, he looks MUCH more like the comic book Iron Man than Batman does the current comic book’s Batman, and that’s definitely going to factor into Iron Man’s success. Batman in TDK looks like some stupi robo Batman or something. It’s nothing like the comix.

Craig on April 24, 2008 at 10:46 pm

ummm, too creepy huh? So I guess we need a kiddy Jim Carrey style villian instead. Might as well bring Schumacher back while we’re at it, because he was soooo good at bringing Batman to the big screen…

you have to be kidding me, Mr. Ryder.

Eman on April 24, 2008 at 10:48 pm

TDK is going to own all of these movies, especially Iron Man. The storyline is TDK is way too superior to be surpassed by Iron Man. We will see what happens. The Dark Knight all the way!!

Jack Ryder on April 24, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I was in no way suggesting that they bring back the shumacher gayness into the series.

He isn’t so much creepy, he’s more grotesque looking, and that is what will drive people away. Besides, even non fan people who have seen the footage still think that Ledger’s casting is very poor, and that he is nothing like the Joker and that no sane person would ever cast him as said villain. I was merely saying that when they do something as moronic as a Joker with a cut face, who’s face is the only thing white on him and even that is only makeup he puts on, and cast an actor who is, at best, an overrated pretty boy as the Joker, people in general are not gonna fly with it, and that it is quite possible that the film will be a dissapointment and tank at the BO just like another very hyped sequel with a similar disguisting revisionist take on a classic villain, Batman Returns.

The story may be great, but a great story doesn’t mean that it will be biggest at the BO. Academy awards are full of films with “great” story films that don’t make a dime at the BO.

No, my friends, Iron Man decimates the Dark Knight, hands down.

Ryder's a dumbass on April 24, 2008 at 11:20 pm

LOL there is a LOT of speculation and bias in your post. I’m guessing that’s your own personal opinion and maybe a couple of your friends’? Everyone! Did you hear? Jack Ryder’s opinions are fact and correlate with how the public feels! And don’t bother responding because I already know the answer. “No, I swear man! I’ve talked to so many people and you wouldn’t believe how much they hate the Joker, LAWL”.

P.S. I think I remember EW’s 2006 predictions where they said Superman Returns would be the number 1 film of the summer. Great job guys!

Everyone! Did you hear? ^ This guy’s a complete douche bag who has nothing to say that’s worth the time it took him to type it!

Because I’m not saying “Dark Knight is teh awesome” my posts are completely invalid? I merely stated my thesis, like the magazine and this site did about the film, and because you didn’t like it, you write back and accuse me of being biased. Your posts are a complete waste of space. You dissapoint me. The only reason why God has not wiped your sorry ass of the face of this earth is that you amuse him somehow.

You are truly pathetic. Go back too your cheetos and blog in your mom’s basement.

“P.S. I think I remember EW’s 2006 predictions where they said Superman Returns would be the number 1 film of the summer. Great job guys!”

Even more pathetic, super-absentee-dad-man’s lackluster film is the number 1 film of 06.

brian on April 25, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Buddy, anyone with a half a brain can see that your prediction is biased to the nth degree. I admit that my comment was probably a little too much, but then again, it was needed to counteract your bulls**t assertions! You haven’t even tried to counteract my notion that all your assertions are biased. And no, “wtf man! I’m not biased” doesn’t invalidate my claim. Give me UNBIASED proof. Can you show me some evidence that people aren’t looking forward to The Dark Knight more than Iron Man? You can’t, right? So just sit back and watch what happens. I never once said I’m looking forward to The Dark Knight more than Iron Man, which I’m not at the moment. I just needed to stop your idiotic statements that you present as fact and your fanboyism. Come on fanboys, give the “my superhero is better than your superhero” s**t a rest, sheesh!

jack ryder = stupid moron on April 26, 2008 at 12:37 am

Mr.Ryder you must not get out of your house very much because everyone is saying that the Dark Knight is of a greater quality of film than Iron Man. Iron Man is just a superhero blockbuster much like fantastic four. It has great marketing but when you watch the movie it doesn’t really all add up. Sure it will be decent but nowhere in the range of what the Dark Knight brings to the table, superb acting, directing, viral marketing, story, and oh yeah I forgot, more people know about Batman than Iron Man, Batman is more well known throughout the world even to people who are not interested in comics.

“Can you show me some evidence that people aren’t looking forward to The Dark Knight more than Iron Man? You can’t, right?”

Can you give me proof that people are looking forward to TDK more than Iron Man?

“I just needed to stop your idiotic statements that you present as fact and your fanboyism.”

What the fuck???

“Come on fanboys, give the “my superhero is better than your superhero” s**t a rest, sheesh!”

Agreed.

“Mr.Ryder you must not get out of your house very much because everyone is saying that the Dark Knight is of a greater quality of film than Iron Man.”

I am falsely accused of “representing what everone thinks”, by the same token, you are too.

PROVE IT.

And this thread was about which film would perform best at the BO, not which was the better “quality”. Altho Iron Man wins both, IMO.

“Iron Man is just a superhero blockbuster much like fantastic four. It has great marketing but when you watch the movie it doesn’t really all add up.”

Have you even seen the movie? No. So SHUT THE FUCK UP. Come back in a week and THEN tell me what you think.

“Sure it will be decent but nowhere in the range of what the Dark Knight brings to the table, superb acting, directing,”

Iron Man has ALL of those but doesn’t have the STUPID annoying viral campaign, which is a PLUS.

“more people know about Batman than Iron Man, Batman is more well known throughout the world even to people who are not interested in comics.”

People said the same about X-Men.

“jack ryder = stupid moron ”

Sickening. I’ll bet you feel really good, “hey, mom, i made my screen name make fun of this guy at a website, guess what? i called him a stupid moron! haw haw”.

But if it prevents you from hitting the flour, good on ya.

dickhead.

and yeah, you’re the same guy.

Joe- Ryder your dumb on May 5, 2008 at 3:15 am

Ryder you are a dumbass. Everyone ive talked to and on most of the main website people are saying that TDK is better movie. It will make more money because Ledger was an Iconic actor whose last complete film deserves to be seen.

Plus this isnt the batman film series from the 90s its a more realistic verison which is based on a graphic novel and the more darker Batman comics. And trust me people arent tired of seeing batman films. We have been waiting 3 years for this film.

and ryder your making your self look like an asshole

Jack Ryder was RIGHT! on May 21, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Guess what? Iron Man is the tenth biggest opening of all time and has made over 430 MILLION $$$ worldlwide and has been in theaters for only 3 weeks! Ha! This totally PWNED Batmn Begins and will PWN TDK at the BO too. It was a better film AND it mad more money than BB. Ha!

Douchebags.

JoeyTDKfan on July 18, 2008 at 1:46 am

I find it funny that people believe that Ironman is better than The Dark Knight. I hear no one in IronMan for Oscar buzz like the Joker in DK. And DK is a serious movie and not just a popcorn movie. It got 4 stars from most of the reviews given for the movie. Ironman did not get more perfect reviews like DK. And plus its hyped by people who saw it. And they think its better than Ironman.

Jack Ryder= U look Stupid now on July 18, 2008 at 3:05 am

Looks like The Dark Knight is going to run circles around Iron Woman at the box office it has already set box office records and it still doesnt even release for a few more hours.

Dan on July 19, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I think TDK has proved that it can not only beat Iron Man, but every movie this year!

TDK was amazing!!!!

SteveGrassel on July 19, 2008 at 8:59 pm

I think EW has proven that they don’t know shit.

rocky420 on July 29, 2008 at 4:57 am

well well…what do we have here….Dark Knight owns everyone……

Jack Ryder - Where art thou on July 29, 2008 at 4:58 am

truly…where is Jack Ryder…its been 10 days since DN has released and it is already owning Iron Man…not that Iron Man was a bad movie…it was a great film…but Dark Knight…it is a class apart…

JoeyTDKfan on July 30, 2008 at 2:03 am

I hate to tell you rydar. Ironman wasn’t that good. Fun movie. It started the summer with good comic movies, Hulk followed and than Batman closed it with the best yet. Look, Ironman is crappy character anyway. Its about a greedy rich guy all for himself until a accident.
Batman was rich but fought for others and uses his money for good. Better character, better comics and better movie. Plus Ironman was the cause for civic war in marvel universe. What a idiot.

Gabriel on July 30, 2008 at 5:56 am

sorry to say but iron man made $201 million in FIVE days and TDK made 203.8 million in SEVEN. iron man beet TDK in BO although i personally think there both great movies iron man wins.

Phil on July 30, 2008 at 7:15 am

Gabriel…

What?

Who taught you math?

Jack Ryder on July 31, 2008 at 1:43 am

OK. When I’m wrong, I’ll admit it. You guys were totally right. I’m sorry for being an asshole. :D You were right, I was wrong. Please be happy.

TDK was awesome and deserves everything it gets. Long live TDK. I just happened to like Iron Man better.

I’ll go now, and leave you with this: a real comic book expert knows who Jack Ryder is. :D

Jhon on July 31, 2008 at 9:29 pm

IRON MAN is waaay better that TDK and it has a sum wat belivable storyline. batman isjust a guy who is like a bat and is just stupid.IRON MAN is a billionar who makes a suite and he is a engineer so its better then a guy turning into a human-bat IRON MAN OWNS ALL!!!!

Gabriel on August 1, 2008 at 3:44 am

“Gabriel…

What?

Who taught you math?

Comment by Phil”
it dont matter who taught me math look up the facts bitch. iron man won.

Jak on August 2, 2008 at 11:35 am

- Reply to Jack Ryder’s last comment.

Uhh… wow, seriously?

Yeah, The Dark Knight doesn’t have a specific story line, like he has to defeat The Joker or something, but that’s why it’s so complex and better than Ironman. See, most superhero movies have a regular story line. Where they have to defeat some evil bad guy.

Well this one was about how Batman really isn’t Gotham’s hero, just their “Dark Knight”. It wasn’t just about the Joker, though he did have a lot to do with it.

So see, this is why The Dark Knight is probably one of the best movies in history, because it isn’t like the regular movies, it’s different; in one of the best possible ways.

Jak on August 2, 2008 at 11:37 am

Oh, opps, SORRY. The comment I replied to was by Jhon, not Jack Ryder.

My apologies. :)

Jak on August 2, 2008 at 11:39 am

Oh and to Gabriel.

It does matter who taught you math, because obviously you don’t realize that Ironman and The Dark Knight are sort of on even grounds since there’s a 2 million difference in 2 days between the two. If The Dark Knight was only out for 5, it’d have the same number, not exactly, but pretty close.

JoeyTDKfan on August 3, 2008 at 1:43 am

Whatever you Ironman fans think, Ironman was great sure. But it didn’t outside dark knight. It was a good movie. Ironman: Now as far is fun goes, more lighthearted, and good action-Ironman shines. Dark Knight shines in darkness of story, the villian makes the movie and has many moments that put you in awe.
I think both will do good in future movies as well as long they continue doing good stories. One thing for sure there can’t be no more Rachel Dawes in Batman. She was only weak character. If they want to stick to comics: she needs to be gone.

corey1234 on August 7, 2008 at 11:48 pm

To Gabriel what are you thinking the dark knight made 204m in 5 days where Ironman made 115m. THat not even close. And I am a Ironman fan. But the dark knight was way better.
