Eurovision: The Movie

euro.jpgWell it can’t be any worse than the event itself!

Just two days after this year’s Eurovision Song Contest (won by Serbia) and it’s been announced by Variety that a movie based on the annual event is in the works.

Borat screenwriter Dan Mazer and The History Boys producer Damian Jones will make the film for Working Title Pictures, which is being described as a “comedy movie”. I guess it really has to be based on that load of crap… needless to say I didn’t watch it on Saturday night.

This annual TV songfest brings together pop acts from 42 countries to compete for its grand prize, with the winner decided by votes from national juries. Cheesy, kitsch and often inadvertently hilarious, it’s one of Europe’s most-watched TV events.

A light-hearted comedy about Eurovision might work. It’s an hilarious contest really. Neighbouring countries vote for their friends rather than for the quality of the country’s performance and the signing is usually worse than the people they cut at the audition stage of American Idol or X-Factor.

Let’s hope they get Terry Wogan involved to do the voice-over commentaries!

Eurovision was, as always, AWESOME on saturday. How the Ukraine didn’t win I don’t know! That song was ridiculously fun, as for the Serbian entry – meh?

Wogan was on top form, any movie would simply HAVE to include him. But seriously… a movie? I don’t think I really understand – it’s a song contest.

No doubt the movie will follow one band and their determination and lengths to win the contest… but they will probably be a part of a country (like the UK) who won’t get votes because of their political allegiance to the U.S.

If done in a Borat or The Office style “fly on the wall” docu-drama type thing… I think this could work really well. There’s enough colour characters you could create for Euro Vision if you used your imagine.

Yeah, I’m not really sure I like the idea of a movie. Sure, I loved the show (and I’m still reeling from the fact that Portugal didn’t even manage to get enough votes to qualify for the finals) but a movie? Not so sure about that.
