Emilio Estevez, who is starting to look a lot like a friendlier Michael Douglas in his old age has revealed plans of his directing follow-up to the brilliant 2006 movie BOBBY.
The movie titled THE PUBLIC, is a social drama loosely based on a LA Times op-ed piece titled Shelters for Dickens, Shakespeare and the homeless written by a retiring Salt Lake City librarian, in which he discusses the sad truth that libraries have become shelters for homeless people and the mentally disturbed due to cuts in social care budgets.
It’s certainly a provocative notion, even if it doesn’t sound like it will make for an easy transition to film. Estevez has wrote a fictional script taking place over two cold nights in Winter where a L.A. library becomes overwhelmed with homeless and the mentally ill looking for shelter. He’s been working on the project for most of 2007.
A late March date has been locked and Estevez is currently casting the massive 16 character ensemble, something he amazingly managed to keep grounded together quite well in his last movie which had a similar number of characters.
Doesn’t sound like an easy narrative film but the idea is provocative enough. He shouldn’t be short of talent either because there aren’t too many projects going around right now because of this damn strike, so he could land some big names here.
