Though we expected at least two of these names to sign on for THE AVENGERS, it’s still nice to get official confirmation from Marvel Entertainment today that Robert Downey Jr, Don Cheadle and Jon Favreau have signed on for the big Summer 2011 tentpole.

Downey Jr and Cheadle (as the new Jim Rhodes) will be part of the huge ensemble cast. Favreau, director of IRON MAN and it’s upcoming sequel, will only executive producer. We can only speculate that his name is in the mix to also direct.

The press release gives us the first synopsis for the movie…

THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel spoke of Cheadle’s involvement in the future of the franchise…

“We are very excited about working with the extraordinarily talented Don Cheadle as we expand the role of Rhodey in Iron Man 2. It has already become apparent as we prep the movie for production, that the dynamic between Robert and Don will take Iron Man 2 to new heights,”

IRON MAN 2 opens May 7th 2010.

THE AVENGERS… with THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA currently uncast (and a origin movie for both coming prior to this flick) opens July 15th 2011.
