Most definitely taking a cue from Cloverfield, producer Peter Jackson and his new protage Neil Blomkamp (the guy who he trusted to direct Halo as his directorial debut before the studio cut their financing, many believe because of that decision) have cooked up this sci-fi movie District 9 which has slowly been gathering an audience through viral marketing and teasing over the past 12 months.
Attached today to prints of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is a teaser trailer for the Sony Pictures film which has the intriuging concept that aliens live among us and have become refugees in South Africa. They live in District 9, a camp where “non-humans” have lived for thirty years since the first alien landed on Earth.
The film is shot in a documentary style, to give it that sense of realism, and scope, and I guess post-modernism that Cloverfield and Diary of the Dead carried. That shot of that massive ship just looks insane and I like the blurry alien, just giving us as much as what we need.
The movie opens August 14th and Sept. 4th in the U.K.

You should google Bloemkamps short film “ALIVE IN JOBURG” – I think Distric 9 is based on it. Its about an Alien invasion in Johannesburg. And its REALLY great!!!
Here it is:

Check it out – its worth your 6 minutes!
Looks very interesting.
yeaaaa. i just saw this trailer before wolverine and it looks damn cool. definately had the “cloverfield” field to it, we have no idea what it is. but i did perk up when i saw neil bloemkamps name pop up on the screen. i was imediatelly reminded of the “alive in joberg” short that he made. i was wondering if he had actually decided to make it into a feature film? thatd be damn cool.
in either case, my eyes and ears are gonna be peeled for more coverage of this film. ya know he was supposed to direct Halo but that was put on hold a while ago.
I think its very obvisious that “District 9″ is the full feature version of “Alive in Joburg”. The aliens are the same. The style is the same.
I loved Joburg – so I will definatly check District out.
Alive from Joburg was around long before Cloverfield. As far as I have seen Blomkamp was among the first to use handycam realism with realistic special effects. Something he went on to use in his trademark Citroen C4 transformer commercial.
I’ve listed a few more of his films here:
