Details of the 2 Grindhouse DVD releases…

grindhouse_posters.jpg

At the Con, details were finally given out on what we can expect with the DVD release of Grindhouse. I know what your asking… will the release be as big a shambles as the theatrical marketing for the movie or have they actually come to their senses and offered audiences lots of different ways to purchase the films (i.e. both films in one box set and individual releases)?

Well I can tell you, both movies will be released separately and there won’t be a box set. At least not yet anyway.

First Death Proof

Quentin Tarantino’s serial-killer homage to the old school car chase film, Death Proof will hit shelves with over 30 minutes of additional, never-before-seen footage including the maddening “missing reel” (containing the excised lapdance sequence) as well as a black and white segment in the film’s second act. The DVD will hit on September 18, 2007 for a price of $29.95. Features will include:
• Finding Quentin’s Gals
• The Guys of Death Proof
• Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike
• Introducing Zoe Bell
• Quentin’s Greatest Collaborator: Editor Sally Menke
• Double Dare trailer
• International Poster Gallery

This will be the print of the movie shown in the U.K. when Death Proof hits theatres this September.

For Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror

Meanwhile, the Robert Rodriguez zombie entry, Planet Terror, will attack with more footage, deleted scenes, a full commentary and the infamous missing reel. That disc will drop on October 16, 2007 for a price of $29.95 and its features will include:
• Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Robert Rodriguez
• International trailer
• Deleted Scenes
• Cooking School
• 10-Minute Film School
• The Stunts
• The Make-up and Effects
• The Badass Babes
• The Renegade Guys
• The Costumes
• The Production Design

And what about the fake trailers? Have those been lost forever?

This is a joke of a release quite frankly. I’m disgusted that they aren’t releasing the whole GRINDHOUSE experience onto DVD with the fake trailers and stuff, and then give people the option to buy them separately with a release like this.

Those trailers are too good to not make it onto DVD.

Please let their me a better box set on the way.

  1. I never saw the attraction in these movies. They are ridiculous.

  2. Sigh… the Weinsteins have really dropped the ball on this one, especially for Europe-based fans like myself. I was really hyped for the movie and would happily have seen the movie at the cinema (if it had come out close to the US release) and bought the DVD (if it was both movies in 1 package) without any hesitation.

Now, I’m bored of hearing about the movies, and I don’t want to watch them in a split-up, adulterated form. I will not be spending any money until a proper box set is released somewhere in the world. In other words, they’ve already lost my money for the theatrical run, and are apparantly doing what they can to stop me from wanted to give them any cash at all. Note to Weinsteins: there is a large audience for this kind of movie. If you lose money on Grindhouse’s DVD release, you only have yourselves to blame.

  3. They should have released a bare-bones 1-disc release ( both movies, with a couple commentary tracks -maybe- and a few prodcution notes) then in six months or so release a two-disc “Special Edition” with all the bells and whistles and extended footage. But to release a bastardized version is just bad! The Weinsteins have f*cked this up from day one! What morons!

  4. This doesn’t make any sense at all does it?

They make no money from the theatrical release of the films but they know their will be a keen audience on DVD so what do they do… they release a piss-poor effort of a DVD which is likely to cost them so much in revenue.

They could have made back the majority of what they lost on the movie if they had done a better job with these DVDs.

  5. RE the UK cinema release - what format is this taking? both films together or seperate? Have been desperate to see these films for ages…

  6. Hi Steve,

Well it won’t be released in the U.K. for a while… at least not Death Proof anyway as that movie hits our cinema’s in September.

Planet Terror might get a release before the end of the year but who knows. You could always import these region 1 babies as there’s a few sites that do them quite cheap like CD-Wow or Asian sites… if you have a multi-region player.

They are certainly worth seeing although it’s a shame the U.K. won’t get to see the movies as they were originally intended.

  8. My discussion on this very subject over at laughingplace.com lead me here.I reiterate what I said over there—”Grindhouse” should be released on DVD EXACTLY as it played in theaters earlier this year{If you like one movie, but not the other, you own the DVD,remember? You can pick and choose!}.THEN,and only then, should they release their limited-edition,European-release,blah-blah-blah,whatever crazy-ass altered version
    they wanna release!!!
