Depp and Mann, together at last?

Posted by Will Reynolds

Michael Mann sure does like his movie stars. A roll call of his leading men is a tad intimidating: Day-Lewis, De Niro, Pacino, Crowe, Smith, Cruise, Foxx… urm… Farrell.

Well, maybe not the last guy but it’s clear that Mann likes working with the finished article. I doubt he’d be caught trawling the West End or Broadway, or flicking through the old telebox to unearth the next big thing.

Johnny Depp is one actor that Mann hasn’t had a brush with yet. Though that may all change if a report from today’s Hollywood Reporter is to be believed. Depp, who would’ve starred in SHANTARAM and then THE RUM DIARIES had the strike not put the kibosh on both, is circling a project that Mann is looking to shoot in Chicago in March.

PUBLIC ENEMIES: AMERICA’S GREATEST CRIME WAVE AND THE BIRTH OF THE FBI, 1933-34, is Brian Burrough’s non-fiction account of the Depression-era crime wave which Mann has long held an interest in directing.

Depp is considering playing the part of bank robber John Dillinger. Along with Mann, Kevin Misher will produce; Robert De Niro and his partner Jane Rosenthal, who originally optioned the book, are exec producers. The project is set up at Universal.

Of course, all this is completely theoretical, because if the strike extends to March then the movie, which doesn’t seem to have any kind of script, won’t get made.
