Death Match! Guns vs. Samurai Swords in the ARENA!
I presume that newcomers to the movie industry Tobey Wagstaff and Darren Howell pitched this film idea to some video game studio’s first before being rejected and then deciding - “what the hell, might as well try and make it a film”.
Because this is one lousy idea for a movie. How in God’s name can they pull this off.
Summit Entertainment have bought their script for Arena and it is described as this…
Story centers on a group of modern-day soldiers who are mysteriously transported from the thick of battle to a terrain-shifting landscape where they must fight the best warriors of all different eras and histories in a gladiatorial fight to the death — or be killed by the all-powerful operators of the “Arena.”
This pitch reminds me of a rather ridiculous late 70’s Japanese movie with the almost as ridiculous title - G.I. Samurai. That movie which starred legend Sonny Chiba actually revolved around the idea of modern day soldiers being mysteriously transformed into the past where they ended up in the middle of a massive Samurai civil-war.
The light-hearted movie featured such delights as military style helicopters against men on horseback…
Guess Arena will be the same.
If you are at all interested, you can see a trailer for G.I. Samurai HERE.
They have to make it a military combat movie in the vein of 300 if this new project is going to stand any chance in hell of surviving. If they even try and give characters some backstory or too much plot - then it’s doomed.
