With the super quick turn-a-round of DVDS these days, it won’t be long until I can finally sit down and watch Brian De Palma’s last movie The Black Dahlia. Although it did appear on many critics list of “worst movies of the year”, the ten minutes I saw of it were really intriguing and I still have faith in him.
Whether I liked the ten minutes or not, the movie still flopped though and it begs the question…. where does the once critically lauded director go go from here?
Production Weekly are reporting that he is to helm the movie Redacted, based around the real life events of a rape and murder of a 14 year old girl and the majority of her family in Iraq by FOUR U.S. SOLDIERS.
Controversial indeed.
Apparently the film will use a mixture of documentary footage, youtube videos!!!, excerpts from soldier’s blogs and clips from news broadcasts to form the narrative.
Well it’s certainly a unique method for the shooting of a film, and I have to to say it sounds a little too ambitious to me. Any film that relies on “specialist” footage to tell a narrative story is always going to be fighting a losing battle in my opinion.

Very good idea! Not only does DePalma use youtube to tell a story (something I have been contemplating myself), but it allows him a chance to stop aping other directors in his direction, and instead concentrate on telling a complete story.
Yes it definitley sounds interesting, I must admit I’ve never been a major fan of his. I’ll be checking up on this film though. I respect the guy for choosing a topic that could quite easily (and I expect it might) flop in the states due to the plot.
