Unsurprisingly 20th Century Fox and Marvel are mulling over a revival of Daredevil, the character that they thought would easily join the high ranks of Spider-Man and X-Men as a third big “comic book to film money maker” back in 2003 but when they hired the wrong director (Mark Steven Johnson), it barely crossed the $100 million mark domestically (it was made for $78 million) and was more disliked than loved.
Though I will forever contend that Johnson’s director’s cut makes for at least an interesting watch. I would say he got more of the character right than wrong, and it wasn’t so terrible like Ang Lee’s Hulk or his own later mis-fire of Ghost Rider that a reboot is needed.
I still think the way to go is to put Ben Affleck back in the suit (as he made a good Matt Murdock, and he is older and wiser a performer now) and give Kevin Smith the reigns on it. I know those guys could save this franchise. It doesn’t have to be a reboot, just make a sequel that stands-alone.
Talk of a Daredevil revamp has been on the agenda recently after the sometimes insane Frank Miller suggested he would love to have a crack at the character with Jason Statham starring. A hardcore, balls to the wall and extremely dark Daredevil is what he promised.
Though after seeing the trailers for The Spirit - one wonders if he should ever be given the reigns to a comic book property ever again.
So just to be clear. We know nothing more than Fox are looking to “revive” the character. Reboot, or sequel to the 2003 film, that could mean either. In fact, they may not even have a plan yet.
IF they are smart, they would let Marvel use the character in the new Universe they are creating… it would certainly be a nice addition to The Avengers and would give the character more exposure down the line.
Discuss: Daredevil, too good of a character to be left on the shelf? Would you like to see a reboot, or is their still life left in the character that Ben Affleck created? Frank Miller/Kevin Smith - who do you trust with this?

Daredevil was never part of the Avengers was he? I thought he was in the Defenders with Doc Strange and Namor?
Anyway , he should def get another crack at a movie, not interested in seeing Miller do it though.
kevin smith directing daredevil? have u got any idea of what you are talking about?
affleck sure wont b back as daredevil-no way. dont let miller touch it either. cant think of a good director at the moment but yea it should tie in with the avengers movies even thou daredevil never was one of em.
I don’t trust Fox with this property anymore, I say give it back to Marvel and let them have a crack at it.
The mistake with this franchise was making Elektra instead of Daredevil 2. Elektra, poor quality aside, was a movie that no one was clamoring for featuring a character who was killed off. Her death was one of the only things I liked about Daredevil. All this is moot if there would have been a shread of talent behind the camera. Mark Stephen Johnson and Rob Bowman are simply not good enough. Frank Miller is about to be regulated to direct to DVD once The Spirit tanks so I would avoid him at all costs.
Daredevil is weak. Ben Affleck is weak. Let sleepin’ dogs lye.
The only sequel i would wanna see is someone rearranging matt murdock’s furniture over and over again (i know, i know.. old joke).
You know, I’m really started to get annoyed with how Fox treats their comic properties. Especially since they have some good ones. They did good with X1 and X2 but then I think they forgot something along the way.
Suddenly they’re movies didn’t have anything going for them except they wanted to get them out to make the quick buck and sell lots of toys and merchandise. Rather than making a good film that’s true to the character. One that tells a good story.
They screwed up X-Men with X3, Fantastic Four sucked majorly, Daredevil was a waste of time, and they’re completely screwing over Dragonball, and I’m sure there are many others. Who ever is in charge of the comic properties at Fox needs to be fired.
Personally, I would like to see Paul Greengrass have a go at filming Daredevil. I always thought gritty realism and comics go well together…
Great idea Phoenix, I had never considered Greengrass but he could make it interesting.
Don’t let Kevin Smith near Daredevil. The guy couldn’t even be bothered to write the Daredevil comic book consistently. He hasn’t done a single “gritty” or “dark” movie, only indie comedies. So why ANYONE thinks he could handle DD is ridiculous.
Give the movie to a Paul Greengrass or a Clark Johnson, or better yet, a Joe Carnahan!
I do not know Clark Johnson. He is not listed at IMDB either, as far as I can tell. Can someone please give me some background on this guy? Much appreciated!
Fox need to stop making adult themed movies as PG-13s. The best Daredevil story is the Born Again saga, penned by Frank Miller. Sadly, the only decent Marvel movies are coming out from the Marvel studio. It’s a shame that Fox is made up of bean counters looking only to release a certain rating. It’s laziness as good marketing will bring in punters.
I’d trust frank miller with it. He wrote daredevil longer and debatably better than anyone has. I love Kevin Smith’s work (aside from jay and silent bob strike back), but his first big action movie i don’t believe could be daredevil. If I could pick any director it’d be darren aronofsky (even though i’m nervous about him doing robocop).
