DANGEROUS LIAISONS reunion?
DANGEROUS LIAISONS was an uber successful movie for the trio of Michelle Pfeiffer (her first Oscar nom), screenwriter Christopher Hampton (his first Oscar win) and director Stephen Frears (For 18 years, his highest grossing film), so it’s with little surprise that they are to work together again.
The movie in question is CHERI, an adaptation of a classic 1920’s novel written by Colette a similarly bed-hopping romantic tale about the lingering effects of a romance between a middle-aged woman and a wealthy young man. The book is described as being heavy on lust, love and passion, with one of it’s central themes being a women’s fear of aging, something several interviews with Pfeiffer I saw last year touched upon.
LIAISONS is a movie I always felt was a little flat but it’s themes were always strong and the acting and direction was impressive. Pfeiffer is enjoying a career renaissance right now and Frears is one of the best directors of adapted material working today. There will be high expectations on this after the success of the last movie the trio worked on, let’s hope they can deliver.
The movie is setup at Miramax and Pathe, with the same distribution deal that they developed for Frears last movie THE QUEEN. Shooting begins in April say Variety.
