Rope of Silicon have posted a great little article explaining their reasons for why Laurence Fishburne is the wrong kind of actor to the voice the Silver Sufer in the Fantastic Four sequel.
I agree with them, 100%.
His voice is too deep, too powerful, too recognizable. Doug Jones should have provided the voice for the character he motion captured for, or at least someone whose voice didn’t sound like a big hefty black man. It’s like James Earl Jones providing the voice for C3-PO!
The site have also posted a great little clip which shows off a stunning little sequence from the film but it highlights perfectly the mis-match of voice and character on screen.
Jessica Alba looks terrible in this scene too. Boy oh boy, isn’t she just going to take every scene down a notch…
The look of the Silver Surfer is finally starting to grow on me but if the voice is as terrible as it is in this scene all the way through the movie, then I’m constantly going to be distracted and taken out of the moment.
The film opens 15h June in the both the U.K and the U.S.

I disagree on all points. Doug Jones voice coming out of the Silver Surfer would’t just take me out of the movie, it would take me out of the theater too. An effeminate, metrosexual voice coming out of him is all wrong. If you’re the herald for somebody who can destroy planets then your voice is going to shake the room, at the very least. Silver Surfer’s not wimpy, why should his voice be?
And since when is “sounding like a black man” a bad thing?
“big hefty black man” is what I said. The Silver Surfer is clearly not a big hefty black man. If he was to sound like Will Smith… then that’s cool.
It’s just he sounds like Laurence Fishburne, for obvious reasons. So whenever I see him I’m going to think of Morpheus in The Matrix.
I can’t help it when he has such a distinct voice.
I disagree Matt, I think his voice sounds just right for the surfer, it’s powerfull yet understated, just how the surfer should sound.
I totally agree. I love the trailers and am really looking forward to this but I’m concerned about the voice of Silver Surfer. Doesn’t seem quite right…
I agree with Matt. We’re hearing Laurence Fishburne when he speaks, not the Silver Surfer. I wish they would just cast an unknown actor with a great voice to solve this.
But, sadly, I have a feeling it doesn’t matter. If the first film is any indication, this one will be terrible. I blame Tim Story, who should never have been hired to direct these movies.
