Coming back for a second style. HAIRSPRAY 2!

New Line’s near saviour as a company last year was Hairspray, the adaptation of John Waters musical which earned $200 million worldwide and was a huge Christmas seller for both the DVD and soundtrack CD.

But of course mega failings elsewhere, most notably the multi-million loss The Golden Compass meant an end to the four decade old studio, which was gobbled up by Warner Bros.

WB, never missing out on a money making venture… have convinced Waters to write a sequel with early hints that director Adam Shankman, the producers and songwriters would return for another song and dance.

The next task for the studio is to convince the major stars from the original film to return as a sequel was never originally planned, none of them had such a deal in their contracts.

A release date of July 2010 has been tentatively scheduled.

“I never thought of musicals as franchises, but it certainly worked with ‘High School Musical,’ and the idea of working with that cast again, and creating new material and music, is a dream come true,” Shankman told Daily Variety. “John (Waters) has such an original and extraordinary voice; we all can’t wait to see what he has come up with.

Has their ever been a good or successful musical sequel, because I can’t think of any - either on Broadway or in the Cinema.

  1. Matt, you’re forgetting Grease 2. Man, that film is awesome…

Seriously though, Hairspray 2? Instead of flogging a concept to death, why don;t they try and come up with something creative and use the all-singing all-dancing talents knocking about and push boundaries?

  2. It is a myth that Golden Compass killed New Line. It made 70 million at the U.S. box office, 40 million in DVD sales, and 25 million in DVD rentals. If we assume 50% went to New Line, that’s close to 70 million

In selling off foreign rights, it was mentioned that 60-70% of the film’s 200 million dollar budget was covered. Therefore, New Line only had 60-80 million at risk. With television sales, it should break even on the movie, if not make a slight profit.

Worldwide, “The Golden Compass” was the fourth highest grossing movie in the history of New Line. Only the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy outgrossed it. While “Golden Compass” did not rescue New Line from being swallowed up by Warner Brothers, it certainly did not cause it to be taken over.

That is why a sequel to the Golden Compass is still being considered.

  3. There will be no sequel to The Golden Compass, unless Warner Bros radically change all aspects of the first movie by lowering budgets and better marketing/talent on the picture.
